Video: Sunland Park This Week with Tom Dawson – Week 11

Host Tom Dawson updates on horses pointing towards the Sunland Derby and Sunland Park Oaks on March 22nd.

This week at Santa Anita, the wealth of three-year old talent in Bob Baffert’s barn was on display as Authentic dominated the San Felipe at two and a half lengths. Authentic is three for three and is expected to get his final prep in the Santa Anita Derby.

In the Tampa Bay Derby, King Guillermo took it all in an impressive 49 to 1 upset and secured 50 qualifying points towards the Kentucky Derby. King Guillermo, along with other top horses in the Kentucky Derby points chase, all have time for another prep race to add to their totals.

The Sunland Derby winner will get 50 points which will put him right in the thick of it.

Last weekend, Sunland featured the $184,000 West Texas Derby for quarter horses. It was desperately close, but Aggressive Driver eked out a narrow victory over K J Frankie B, earning him his fourth straight win.

Next weekend’s action at Sunland Park will be headlined by the Curribot Handicap for older horses.

Host Tom Dawson talks about the main action on the Derby Trail this week, mainly the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Breaking from the outside stall to the rail, Ete Indien shot straight to the front in an impressive gate-to-wire victory and earned 50 qualifying points towards the Kentucky Derby.

At Oaklawn, Silver Prospector won the $750,000 Southwest stakes, but trainer Steve Asmussen says the 3 year old colt will likely remain at Oaklawn. However, there could be others from that race with designs on the Sunland Derby.

One of the riders here that day could be Kentucky Derby winning rider Joel Rosario, and a good bet for his mount could be Bob Baffert trainee and El Camino Real Derby winner Azul Coast.

In case you missed it, Riley Allison Stakes winner Rowdy Yates finished fourth in the first running of the $800,000 Saudi Derby on Saturday.

Back at Sunland Park, there’s big time quarter horse racing on tap this weekend with the $185,000 West Texas Derby highlighting Saturday’s card.

Coming up at Sunland Park this weekend are a pair of stakes races with a $100,000 purse for each. The NMHBA Quarter Horse Stakes will run Saturday and the Enchantress Stakes will run Sunday.

At Santa Anita, 3 year old Eclipse Award champion colt Storm The Court placed fourth behind Nadal, who won the San Vicente making him 2 for 2 and giving Bob Baffert another chip to play in the Kentucky Derby game.

In Tampa Bay, undefeated Independence Hall went for his fourth win, but Sol Volante ran past the leader for the victory.

At Santa Anita, 5-1 favorite Venetian Harbor dominated the Grade II Las Virgenes at a mile.
