TNTM: Talkin Table Top Expansion Games

Danny and Trevor share their top 5 lists of Game Expansions. To qualify as an expansion for their lists the game cannot be a stand-alone expansion. What they mean by that is the expansion must be dependent upon the base game to be a true expansion. If the expansion can be played without the base game it is not a pure expansion in their minds.

Board Game Geek defines a game expansion as additional equipment for a game, usually sold separately. Expansions can be used to add a variant or add additional scenario, to add more players for the game, add new maps or tracks for a game, etc.

Typically an expansion is exactly that… it expands the existing game. It may add the ability to have more players, insert more scenarios, give players more equipment, etc. Expansions keep popular board games relevant after players have gone through many iterations of game play. It helps to keep your board game investment fresh for a longer period of time.

If you own any of the base board games mentioned in these lists, you should give the expansion a try to extend the life of your favorite game.

TNTM: Talkin Table Top Card Games

Danny and Trevor share their top lists for Card Games. To qualify the games must primarily use cards. Some dice and tokens are allowed, but the main component must be cards.

A card game is any game using playing cards as the primary device with which the game is played. The cards may be traditional or game-specific.

Many games that are not generally placed in the family of card games do in fact use cards for some aspect of their game-play. Some games that are placed in the card game genre involve a board. The distinction is the game-play of a card game primarily depends on the use of the cards by players. The board is simply a guide for score keeping or for card placement. Board games generally focus on the players’ positions on the board and use the cards for some secondary purpose.

If you are looking for a game that primarily uses cards these lists are for you. I am sure there is a card-centric game here that will give you hours of enjoyment.

TNTM: Talkin Table Top Funny Games

Danny and Trevor share their top 5 lists of Fun Games. They define Funny Games as those that get players to have a good time and laugh. They do not include the games that just try to put the players into a funny predicament. The game itself must be what causes the laughter.

For the game to fall into their definition of funny it must be the artwork, the mechanics, or game-play that is funny. Putting a player into a physically funny position or condition doesn’t qualify.

Funny Games are usually a big hit at parties and get togethers. If you are planning a party and want to keep the guests entertained please try one of the games on these lists. Your party will be the stuff of legends.

TNTM: Talking Table Top Gateway Games

This week Danny & Trevor go over their top five lists of Gateway Games. There is some debate as to what qualifies a game to be in this category. The generally accepted definition is:

Gateway Game: A game with simple rules that are easy to teach non-gamers in order to attract new players into board gaming as a hobby.

Gateway Game usually have the following qualities:

Simple (so you can explain the rules to them quickly).

Fun (fun games will attract repeat plays).

Short (short hits can be played again, misses gives you time to play something else).

Basically any easy to teach and play game that is quick and fun can be considered a Gateway Game. The term is akin to the “Gateway Drug” definition. They are games that give players an easy entry into the world of board gaming.

Hopefully you this video has helped you discover a game you’d like to try or show to a friend. As always… Keep playing games!

TNTM: Talking Table Top Versus Games

Talking Table Top Versus/Non-Cooperative Games

This episode of Talking Table Top has Trevor and Danny presenting their top 5 “versus” games. Versus Games are usually referred to as non-cooperative games.

In non-cooperative games there is a competition between individual players. All choices are decided by the players based on their own self-interest, presumably without sharing knowledge. There are two basic forms of non-cooperative games.

In the strategic form the payoff for a given player depends on the strategy of that player and all other participating players. The rules and all available strategies are assumed to be common knowledge. There are no unfair advantages or insider knowledge.

The prisoners dilemma format has two prisoners (convicted for committing a crime together). They are interrogated separately and have two obvious choices. They can either tell on the other or remain silent. There are different boundary conditions for each choice.

We hope you discovered a game in this list that interests you. As always, Keep Playing Games!

TNTM: Talkin Table Top Deck Building Games

Danny and Trevor give us the list of their top 5 favorite deck building games.  There is a bit of disagreement between them as to what constitutes a deck building game.

What is a Deck Building Game

A deck-building game is a card game that uses building a deck as the main focus of the gameplay. It is similar to collectible card games (CCGs) in that each player has their own deck.  Unlike CCGs the cards generally are not sold in randomized packs. The majority of the deck is built during the game rather than before the game. Typically, the cards provide a type of game currency which allows players to buy more cards to add to their decks.

Hopefully you have seen a game in this video you are interested in but not aware of.  Remember, play safe and keep playing games.

The main camera battery died with about 2 minutes left.  We apologize for the audio quality from that point on.

TNTM: Talkin Table Top – Party Games

Party games are games that are played at social gatherings to facilitate interaction and provide entertainment. Different games will generate different atmospheres. The party game may merely be intended as an icebreaker. It may also be the sole purpose for/or structure of the party.

Party games aim to include players of various skill levels and player-elimination is rare. Party games are intended to be played socially, and are designed to be easy for new players to learn.

TNTM: Talkin Table Top – Drafting Games

Top 5 Drafting Games

Trevor and Danny are back with another episode of Talkin’ Table Top. This week they give you the run-down of their top 5 favorite drafting style games.

The card drafting game mechanic is where players pick cards from a limited subset (common pool) to gain some advantage or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game. Games where cards are simply drawn from a pile are not card drafting games. Drafting implies that players have some sort of choice.

Hopefully this video has exposed you to some games you didn’t know about. Drafting games can be a lot of fun. By their nature, the game play is usually different every time. Please like and share this video, but most importantly… Keep playing games!
