2018 El Paso County Master Gardener Program Registration Underway

Officials with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Master Gardener’s program are once again inviting residents to apply to the county program.

“El Paso County Master Gardeners are members of the local community who are enthusiastic, love gardening and are willing to share their knowledge with others,” officials with Texas A&M stated.

Persons interested in applying for the 2018 Master Gardener Volunteer Training Course must fill out an application by August 17 and attend the orientation on August 30.

AgriLife officials add, “What really sets Master Gardeners apart is their special training in horticulture and other work as Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service volunteers, helping Extension to provide horticultural information to El Paso County residents.”

The training course will be held on Thursdays, September 6 to November 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension office at the Ascarate Annex at 301 Manny Martinez Sr. Drive.

There is a $195 registration fee for the course. Once residents complete the required classroom time, 62 hours of volunteer time are required to complete the training.

Space is limited, so interested persons should contact Denise Rodriguez at 915-771-2354. Applications can be downloaded online

Deadline to Apply for the Backyard Basics Workshop Approaching

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension will be hosting a Backyard Basics Workshop on September 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m at The Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center at 1380 A&M Circle.

During this event there will be regional experts addressing Canning Jam Basics, Backyard Beekeeping, Fall Vegetable Gardening, Backyard Chickens, Food Safety and Cottage Laws, and Grafting and Plant Propagation.

Via a news release, A&M AgriLife officials said, “Come out and join us to learn about small scale home food production, and a combination of hands on demonstration and educational talks…you don’t have to live in the country to grow your own food!”

The cost is $40 and includes lunch and materials.

To register call (915)-771-2354 or register online at Elp.Tamu.edu. The deadline to register is September 8, space is limited to 50 participants.

Free Gardening Workshops for Community start Friday

The City of El Paso has coordinated with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension to provide a free Gardening 101 Workshop series with the first workshop scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday, April 1, at the Multipurpose Center located at 9031 Viscount.

The community gardening workshops are part of the City’s resilience and sustainability strategy. The workshops, taught by the El Paso County Masters Gardeners, provide the opportunity for people of all ages and skill levels to learn regionally appropriate gardening techniques including: identifying and selecting garden soil, water-saving irrigation techniques, lawn maintenance best practices, managing garden bugs and how to plant in the fall, winter, and spring.

Residents are encouraged to grow their own local food to support healthier and more sustainable lifestyles in our region, as well as contributing to the local economy.

Growing your own food contributes to improved air quality for our region as it saves food miles, the distance food travels from the grower to your plate.

The workshops will be held on the following dates:
