Ascarate Elementary Student to Represent School, County at Statewide Ceremony

Ascarate Elementary School third grader Sienna Salcido is one of 10 students from throughout the state of Texas who will present the Texas Bluebonnet Award to the winning author at the annual Texas Bluebonnet Award ceremony.

Ascarate Elementary was randomly selected from 9 counties in the west Texas area, including El Paso County.  Sienna was selected by Ascarate librarian Leticia M. Guevara to represent the region.

“Sienna is very articulate, has very high vocabulary skills and speaks with confidence. I have no doubt that Sienna will represent west Texas and Ascarate with great pride,” says Mrs. Guevara.

She will present a 3 – 4 minute speech about the winning author and/or illustrator, in front of approximately 1,500 people. She will also prepare questions to ask the winning author.

The Texas Bluebonnet Award is sponsored by the Texas Library Association (TLA). It’s a “children’s choice” program where only Texas students from 3rd to 6th grade can vote for their favorite book. These students must read at least 5 books from a list of 20 books.

The list of 20 books is created by a group of Texas librarians who work with children. Schools and public libraries were also allowed to enter the selection process for student participation in the conference.

The ceremony will be held in Dallas, TX during the Texas Library Association (TLA) Annual Conference, April 3 – 6, 2018.

SISD elementary schools to host Texas Bluebonnet Award voting parties

Team SISD students are exercising their right to vote! Elementary students, with guidance from school librarians and teachers, have been reading books from the Texas Bluebonnet Award reading list.

Now, they have the chance to vote for their favorite book, which will determine which children’s author wins the prestigious Texas Bluebonnet Award. The winning author is awarded by the Texas Library Association in April.

battlebluebonnetsSISD elementary schools will have voting parties to celebrate the students’ success in reading the Bluebonnet books, to engage them in the voting process, and to generate more excitement about reading and the Texas Bluebonnet Award.

Students will participate in voting and other activities centered on the Texas Bluebonnet Award, and will receive “I Voted!” stickers.

The events will lead up to Team SISD’s first Battle of the Bluebonnets in which students will participate in a trivia style contest with questions about the Texas Bluebonnet Award books. A special local celebrity guest will be the announcer for the competition on Feb. 26 at the District Service Center.

SISD’s Battle of the Bluebonnets will be the first contest of its kind in El Paso.
