TFB: Texas’ Second Quarter Food Prices Show Slight Increase

WACO —Retail food prices in Texas showed a slight increase in the second quarter, according to the latest Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) Grocery Price Watch survey.

The survey results recorded a total of $45.86 for a 16-staple item basket, including produce, meat, grain and dairy products.

“It was a slight increase from the first quarter—just 33 cents,” TFB President Russell Boening said. “Oftentimes our total grocery bill is high, but our survey only counts the food products and not the other household items you can purchase in the store.”

Prices at the meat counter were mixed, but sirloin steak led the increase this quarter, up 38 cents to $6.48 per pound.

Lean ground beef dropped 14 cents to $3.53 per pound, and pork chops showed a slight increase, up 3 cents to $3.87 per pound.

Boneless, skinless chicken breasts dropped 13 cents to $3.15 per pound. Sliced turkey showed an 11-cent increase to $4.77 per package.

“It’s peak grilling season for Texans, and the meat counter offers a variety of cuts for all price budgets,” Boening said. “The important thing is to keep a healthy portion of protein on our plates as part of a balanced diet and, of course, enjoy time with family.”

The price of 2% milk stayed the same at $2.96 per gallon. Block cheddar cheese fell eight cents to $2.68, while vanilla ice cream increased 19 cents to $6.25 per half gallon.

Of the 16 food staples surveyed, vanilla cake mix, dried pinto beans, long grain rice and white bread saw a slight decrease in price.

Corn flakes, tomatoes, grapefruit and lettuce registered slight increases for the second quarter.

The TFB Grocery Price Watch is conducted quarterly by shoppers strategically located across the state of Texas. The current survey data was collected by 43 shoppers from May 31-June 7, 2018. TFB has monitored Texas food prices through its Grocery Price Watch survey since March 2009.

TFB Survey: Texas Food Prices Show Slight Drop in 1st Quarter of 2018

WACO, Tx. —Retail food prices showed a slight decrease during the first quarter of 2018, with a basket of 16 staple items at the grocery store totaling $45.53, according to the latest Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) Grocery Price Watch survey.

Prices dropped .63 percent over last quarter, but they are up .90 percent over this time last year.

“The food prices this quarter showed a small decrease,” Russell Boening, TFB president, said. “Lower prices are good news for Texas families, because they help take a little pressure off tight budgets for consumers.”

The meat counter saw mixed prices in the first quarter.  Boneless, skinless chicken breasts showed an eight-cent decrease from last quarter, ringing in at $3.28 per pound.

Ground beef—80 percent lean—also decreased, dropping five cents to $3.67 per pound.

Prices for sirloin steak and pork chops, however, increased slightly. Sirloin steak was up 13 cents to $6.10, and pork chops were up 14 cents to $3.84 per pound.

“Beef and pork were both driven slightly higher during the winter months. Demand helped this move, but it’s still not far from a normal seasonal change in price,” Boening said.

The dairy products in the basket posted lower prices in the first quarter.

Block cheddar cheese rang in at $2.76, down 12 cents, from last quarter, and 2% milk was down 11 cents to $2.96 per gallon. Vanilla ice cream also saw a small decrease of 4 cents to $6.06 per half gallon.

“The dairy herd and milk production in the U.S. have increased,” Boening said. “It’s a basic case of supply and demand. More cows mean more dairy products on the market and the results is a drop in price.”

In the produce aisle, prices for grapefruit were down 24 cents in the first quarter, due in large part to the seasonal increase in supply.

Boening noted Texas citrus growers have helped meet U.S. demand as Florida lost much of its citrus crop to Hurricane Irma.

Tomato prices dropped to $1.08 per pound, a decrease of 14 cents.

Of the 16 items surveyed, lettuce and rice also decreased in price.

Shoppers saw increased prices for white bread, corn flakes, dried pinto beans, vanilla cake mix and sliced turkey.

Texas Food Prices Show Slight Increase

WACO, Texas —Retail food prices in Texas showed a slight increase in the second quarter, according to the latest Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) Grocery Price Watch survey.

The survey results recorded a total of $46.02 for a 16-staple item basket, including produce, meat, grain and dairy products. It’s a 2 percent increase over last quarter’s prices.

“It was a slight increase for the year. When you compare the grocery prices from both quarters this year, it’s a 90-cent difference,” TFB President Russell Boening said.

Prices at the meat counter were mixed.

Sirloin steak led the increase, up 68 cents to $5.97 per pound. Lean ground beef rose by 27 cents to $3.89 per pound, but the price still remains lower than last year’s second quarter price of $3.93 per pound.

Cattle prices saw an increase during the second quarter, following a low point over the winter. Beef demand is strong and is the primary driver for this increase. The second quarter also showed export strength of U.S. beef with countries across the globe.

Boneless, skinless chicken breasts dropped 6 percent to $3.13 per pound. Sliced turkey also showed a decrease—2.58 percent—ringing up at $4.90 per pound.

Lower grain prices and increased broiler production has helped lead the price decline in poultry.

Prices for pork chops remained the same—$3.55 per pound.

“It’s peak grilling season for Texans, and the meat counter offers a variety of cuts for all price budgets,” Boening said. “The important thing is to keep a healthy portion of protein on our plates as part of a balanced diet and, of course, enjoy time with family.”

White bread was a notable decrease in the grocery basket. It dropped 16 cents, or 10.46 percent, to $1.37 per loaf.

“That decrease is not surprising. World wheat production is very high, and Texas farmers are seeing some of the lowest wheat prices in years,” Boening said.

Grapefruits showed a 20-cent increase to 99 cents per pound, due in large part to the end of the production season.

Of the 16 food staples surveyed, vanilla ice cream, vanilla cake mix and block cheddar cheese saw a slight increase. Smaller decreases were registered for lettuce and dried pinto beans.

“Although there were increases, farmers and ranchers still only see a small portion of the prices that consumers pay at the cash register,” Boening said. “It’s tough in the farm economy right now, and farmers are making the most out of their resources.”

Texas Food Prices on Steady Decline

WACO, Texas — Texas shoppers slide into summer with savings as retail food prices continue to drop, according to the latest Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) Grocery Price Watch survey.

The second quarter survey results recorded a total balance of $45.94 for a 16-staple item basket, including produce, meat, grain and dairy products. It’s a one percent decrease from last quarter and a 3.54 percent decrease compared to this time last year.

“It was a small drop in prices, but Texas families have continued to notice savings at the cash register this year,” TFB President Russell Boening said.

Prices at the meat counter were mixed.

Sliced turkey saw an increase of 3.99 percent to $4.95 per package. Lean ground beef rose by 1.03 percent to $3.93 per pound, but the price remains lower than last year’s second quarter price of $4.59 per pound.

Leading the decrease at the meat counter were boneless, skinless chicken breasts, which dropped to $3.14 per pound. That’s down 6.55 percent from $3.36 last quarter. Sirloin steak decreased by 3.97 percent to $6.04 per pound and pork chops fell 2.54 percent to $3.84 per pound.

“The prices for beef, pork and poultry fall into a supply and demand scenario,” Boening said. “A stronger U.S. dollar has affected foreign countries’ buying power, leaving a larger supply in the U.S.”

That, combined with a large supply of milk, is also affecting dairy prices, he noted.

The price of 2% milk fell by 6.45 percent to $2.90 per gallon. Vanilla ice cream and block cheddar cheese fell by 1.96 percent and 1.02 percent respectively.

Grain prices are also seeing fluctuations due to global supply and demand. White bread rose to $1.46, up 4.29 percent. Corn flakes rose to $3.21, up 4.90 percent from last quarter.

Shoppers looking for fresh produce paid less for fresh tomatoes and lettuce. Grapefruits, however, showed an 11-cent increase to 91 cents per pound, due in large part to the end of the production season.

Of the 16 food staples surveyed, long grain rice and dried pinto beans also saw a decrease.
