Links+Story: Texas’ Tax Free Weekend Begins Friday

Whether you’re in need of book bags, blackboard chalk or bell-bottom pants, shoppers can save money on those and certain other items during the state’s sales tax holiday.

“As Texas families begin the process of replacing their beach bags with book bags, Texas’ sales tax holiday is the perfect opportunity to save some money on the supplies families need before the school bell rings,” Hegar said. “As a dad to three young children, I know how these expenses can add up.”

The law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced below $100 from sales tax, saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend during the weekend.

This year, shoppers will save an estimated $90.3 million in state and local sales taxes during the sales tax holiday.

During this annual sales tax holiday, you can buy most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) tax free from a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas. In most cases, you do not need to give the seller an exemption certificate to buy qualifying items tax free.

The sales tax exemption applies only to qualifying items you buy during the sales tax holiday. Items you buy before or after the sales tax holiday do not qualify for exemption, and there is no tax refund available.

This year, the sales tax holiday is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 10-12. Texas’ tax holiday weekend has been an annual event since 1999.

Texas ‘Tax Free Weekend’ for School Supplies starts Friday

While school is already underway at Socorro ISD and a handful of other private schools, parents and kids alike will be flooding stores for the annual Tax Free Weekend.

This year’s Sales Tax Holiday is August 11 through the 13. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced less than $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. surveyed parents across the U.S. on their purchase and spending plans. The survey found that back-to-school spending is up nearly 18% from 2016 in total family spending.

All sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online, or by telephone or mail.  Additionally, shoppers can use layaway plans to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.

The Legislature sets the dates for the sales tax holiday.  Below is the list of items, as well as the FAQ’s on specific topics as provided by the Texas Comptroller’s Office.

Survey Shows Back to School Spending Increase, More Discounts for Teachers, Parents

On the eve of the upcoming Texas Tax Free Weekend, an online deals website finds parents spending more for back-to-school, and has compiled a list of discounts for teachers.

Carson Yarbrough, with, shares the specials and some information regarding back-to-school-shopping.

“We have combed through thousands of deals to bring teachers the best discounts for everything from school supplies to hotel rooms.” Yarbrough shares.

In addition to the deals, Yarbrough says their research reveals some interesting information regarding back-to-school purchases. surveyed parents across the U.S. on their purchase and spending plans. The survey found that back-to-school spending is up nearly 18% from 2016 in total family spending.

Per the survey, most consumers (54.8%) begin their back-to-school shopping in August, while about 27.3% of shoppers get their back-to-school purchases finished earlier on in July.

Yarbrough adds, “From our survey, we discovered that the average American spends $208.10 on back-to-school shopping for each child. Most consumers (53.5%) will be spending anywhere from $101-$300 on each child for back-to-school.”

In terms of total back-to-school spending, the average American spends $428.39 on their family for back-to-school, up from last year’s average of $359 per family.

A majority of consumers (71%) still do their back-to-school shopping in-store, while 22% of shoppers opt for the convenience of online shopping.

When back-to-school shopping, 63.6% of consumers use coupons to save on their back-to-school gear. A majority (41.5%) use in-store coupons, while 22.1% of consumers choose to use online coupons, always conveniently available and updated at
