Museum to host Cinco de Mayo celebration, Logo unveiling for Mexican American Cultural Center

Residents are invited to downtown El Paso, as the Museum and Cultural Affairs Department (MCAD), the El Paso Museum of History (EPMH), and the Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC) will not only be celebrating Cinco de Mayo; but unveiling of the branding logo of the Mexican American Cultural Center as well.

The Cinco de Mayo Celebration is free and open to the public, and is scheduled to run from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 2 at the Museum of History.

“We are excited to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at the El Paso Museum of History and preview the programming our community will be able to enjoy at the MACC,” said Managing Director of El Paso Museums & Cultural Affairs Department, Libraries, and Tourism Tracey Jerome.

Festivities start at 4:30 p.m. with a streetcar ride featuring the Bowie High School Mariachi band – Mariachi Orgullo. The special streetcar ride begins on the corner of Santa Fe and Franklin across the street from the museums.

The Cinco de Mayo celebration continues at 5:30 p.m. at the museum of history.

The Cinco De Mayo Celebration will include performances by pianist Romeyno Gutierrez, a Raramuri native. Artisan vendors from the Downtown Art and Farmers Market will be set up at the museum with a selection of handmade items for sale.

In 2012, El Paso voters overwhelmingly approved a Quality of Life Bond program, which included the Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC) as one of its signature projects. The MACC will provide residents and visitors with a dynamic space for the creation, exhibition and celebration of Mexican American art and culture.

As development is underway for the MACC, its operations and programming will be facilitated at the El Paso Museum of History.

“Here at the museum, we are delighted to host and partner with the Mexican American Cultural Center. I believe both institution’s goals and mission are aligned, as both highlight the unique life and culture that exists here in El Paso,” said El Paso Museum of History Director Vladimir von Tsurikov.
