El Paso County Sheriff’s Office starts Trap-Neuter-Return Program for County Cats

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has begun implementing the Trap-Neuter-Return program.

The Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Program has been adopted by the City of El Paso Animal Services Section (Community Cats Program) in conjunction with Sun City Cats.  Sun City Cats is a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Advocacy Community Organization.

The TNR Program provides a non-lethal approach to long-term free-roaming cat population control.

Cats are territorial by nature and if removed from a community a new cat or group of cats simply move in.  With the TNR Program in place, cats captured in the community are taken to El Paso Animal Services.  They are spay or neutered and have one ear tipped (for easy identification).  Once they recover, the cats are returned to the community where they were found by Sheriff’s Office Animal Control.

The TNR Program is the is the best way to reduce the number of community cats, save taxpayers money, help control rodent populations and improve conditions at the animal shelter.

Variations of this program exist in many other cities in the United States.   Additional information can be found Here and here.
