Kansas, Yandell Reopen to Traffic, Intersection Closures slated for This Week

Many Downtown motorists will soon have an easier commute as the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority announced that several key thoroughfares will reopen in the coming days and weeks. However, even as some streets reopen, new detours and closures are expected at other locations along the 4.8-mile route.

These closures are necessary as crews work on utility relocations related to the El Paso Streetcar Project.

Kansas Street is expected to fully reopen between Main Drive and San Antonio Avenue by the end of this week. San Antonio Avenue is expected to fully reopen to eastbound traffic between Stanton Street and Kansas Street, also before the end of this week. San Antonio will reopen westbound traffic in the coming weeks.

Additionally, San Antonio Avenue will reopen to eastbound and westbound traffic at Santa Fe Street. Lane restrictions, however, remain in place on Kansas Street between Paisano Drive and Father Rahm Avenue.

All lanes of Yandell Drive will reopen at Stanton Street before the end of this week. Stanton Street will reopen between Missouri Avenue and Yandell Drive, also before the end of this week. Stanton Street is expected to reopen between Yandell and Montana early next week.

All lanes of the Franklin Avenue/Oregon Street intersection and the Franklin Avenue/Stanton Street intersection are expected to reopen next week. Also next week, new lane restrictions are expected to be put in place at the intersection of Mesa Street and Franklin Avenue.

Santa Fe Street remains reduced to one lane in each direction between San Antonio Avenue and Franklin Avenue. Beginning during the week of May 9, 2016, Santa Fe Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction at Father Rahm Avenue; Father Rahm Avenue remains closed from Santa Fe Street to Kansas Street.

Motorists who use Santa Fe Street to access Downtown from Loop 375 should consider alternate northbound routes such as Park Street and Campbell Street.

Beginning on Monday, May 9, 2016, the intersection of Stanton Street and Crosby Avenue will be closed in all directions. As work progresses in this intersection, work will move into the Stanton Street/Schuster Avenue intersection.

Later this month, work is expected to return to Stanton Street requiring a complete closure of the Street north of Franklin Avenue.

Lane Closures at Other Locations

  • First Avenue from Campbell Street to Kansas Street
  • Campbell Street at First Avenue
  • Intermittent lane closures on Oregon Street from River Avenue to Glory Road
  • Intermittent lane closures on Stanton Street from River Avenue to Baltimore Drive

Streetcar work Moves to Montana Avenue, Santa Fe Street on Monday

Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists should be on the lookout for changes in traffic patterns in and around Downtown El Paso beginning on Monday, March 28, 2016. The changes are necessary to allow crews to continue the relocation of underground utilities associated with the El Paso Streetcar Project.

Montana Avenue will close to all traffic at Stanton Street on Monday, March 28, 2016. Arizona Avenue is scheduled to re-open to westbound traffic next week; Rio Grande Avenue opened to eastbound traffic earlier this week. Stanton Street remains closed from Yandell Drive to Arizona Avenue.

The previously announced southbound closure on Santa Fe Street has been moved to Monday, March 28, 2016, as well. At that time, Santa Fe will be closed to southbound thru traffic between Franklin Avenue and San Antonio Avenue.

Motorists will be able to access the Judson F. Williams Convention Center Parking Garage via Santa Fe Street during the closure which is expected to last approximately one week. Santa Fe Street will remain open to northbound traffic.

A complete closure of the Santa Fe/San Antonio intersection is anticipated in the coming weeks.

  • Lane closures continue on Oregon Street between River Avenue and Glory Road.
  • Lane closures cnotinue on Kansas Street between Paisano Drive and Father Rahm Avenue.
  • As crews continue laying pipe and pressure testing their installations, Father Rahm Avenue remains closed to east-west traffic. However, all north-south streets are now open at Father Rahm.
  • Kansas Street remains closed between Texas and San Antonio.

In early April, Yandell Drive will be closed at Stanton Street. This closure is expected to impact eastbound motorists on I-10 who use Exit 19A/Mesa Street to access destinations near Downtown. During this closure, Motorists are encouraged to exit Cotton Street, taking Cotton to Arizona Avenue to access destinations north of I-10.
