Safety Updates Proposed for Traffic Leaving the Bridge of the Americas

To discourage illegal u-turns and reduce the number of dangerous weaving motions made by motorists leaving the Bridge of the Americas, the Texas Department of Transportation is considering changes to the northbound detour used by motorists. All northbound traffic leaving the Bridge of the Americas currently merges onto Paisano Drive using an existing on-ramp. Under the proposal, rather than merging, traffic will enter Paisano at a right angle via a new temporary roadway which is better aligned with the temporary CBP Access point. More details will be released on this proposal in the coming weeks.

The Following Long-term Closures

Will Continue Without Interruption:

  • Ramps F and G, which connect I-10 to Juárez at the Spaghetti Bowl, remain detoured through northbound US 54 to Pershing Drive until further notice.
  • Interstate 110, the short freeway spur leading to and from the Bridge of the Americas, remains closed to northbound traffic until further notice.
  • The ramp from southbound US 54 to US 62 (Paisano Drive) remains closed until further notice.
  • Both turnarounds under US 54 at US 62 (Paisano Drive) remains closed until further notice.
  • Intermittent closures on Durazno Avenue, Rosa Avenue and Uva Street.

Connect 10, TxDoT project closures, detours for week of June 7

Construction, detours and closures continue as TxDoT and Connect10 crews roll into June.  Full closure lists via hyperlinks are below, and some high impact closures and detours are outlined as well.

Overnight closures will be in place on Interstate 10 and US 54 next week as crews relocate temporary concrete barriers which outline the I-10 Connect project work zone. The barriers, some of which come in 30-foot long, 42-inch tall sections, create an added layer of separation — and safety — between motorists, construction crews and heavy machinery.

Because of its size and weight, complete closures are necessary to accommodate the heavy machinery required to move these items.

TxDoT, Connect10 closures, detours and work for week of May 24th

Construction crews will be in action all this week, so here’s a look at the upcoming project closures for the week ahead.

Significant closures are highlighted below and complete closure lists via hyperlinks are included below.

When it’s completed, the I-10 Connect Project will change the way many of us to get to Juárez. While the project still has many months to go, some permanent changes will go into effect next week.

Beginning at 6am on Wednesday, May 27, crews will begin demolishing parts of the I-110/US 62 (Paisano Drive) interchange immediately north of the Bridge of the Americas. No left turns and no thru traffic will be permitted at any of the traffic lights on the mid-level of the interchange. Eventually, right turns will be eliminated or reconfigured, too. Stevens Street between the Franklin Canal and Interstate 110 will close permanently at this time as well.

During the week of May 27, crews will implement pedestrian detours, too. Pedestrians will be able to travel north and south as usual via the mid-level of the interchange. However, they will not be able to travel east and west at that location. To accommodate east-west pedestrian traffic, augmented safety measures included pedestrian fencing, speed bumps to slow motorists and a temporary crosswalk immediately north of the Bridge of the Americas will be put in place.

All traffic leaving the Bridge of the Americas will be temporarily required to turn right on US 62 (Paisano Drive) during the demolition work. Traffic on eastbound and westbound US 62 and southbound I-110 will not be impacted at this time.

When the project is completed, all motorized traffic will access the Bridge of the Americas via Interstate 110 — the short freeway spur connecting US 54 to the bridge. T his will alleviate congestion on Paisano near the Chamizal National Memorial and the El Paso Zoo.

Motorists are encouraged to begin adjusting to that eventual configuration now by following the marked “Juárez, México” detours which take traffic via the Pershing Drive Turnaround to US 54 to I-110.

Other nightly closures will be in place in the coming weeks to accommodate demolition at this interchange.

Connect 10, TxDoT project detours, closures for week of May 3rd

Here’s a look at the project closures for the week ahead for the Connect10 project in East-Central El Paso and TxDoT projects area wide.  Highlighted are significant closures, and complete closure lists via hyperlinks are included below.

Intermittent alternating closures on Durazno Avenue and Rosa Avenue will continue between Uva Place and Bowie Street next week as crews continue placing pre-cast concrete bridge deck panels on a new direct connector ramp which will connect southbound US 54 to the Bridge of the Americas.

The closures will not be continuous; both streets will not be closed simultaneously.

The exact dimensions of each precast panel varies, but an average size panel is 8 feet by 5½ feet. The panels weight in at about 2,100 pounds each. To lift the massive panels into place, crews have brought in a 160 foot crane which will place the panels on to the new ramp which will be approximately 75 feet above the driving surface of Interstate 10.

Placement of deck panels is the fourth of roughly seven steps needed to build an overpass Click here for video of recent work placing deck panels on the ramp.

Drivers will also want to plan ahead for a new construction project starting on Mesa.

Construction crews will begin work on a rehabilitation project for SH 20 (North Mesa Street) on Monday, April 13, with placement of signs along the work zone. The project consists of a full-depth (10”) repair of the stretch of roadway from Baltimore/Glory Road to Sunland Park Drive. Crews will conduct the work in estimated mile-long sections starting with the outside lane northbound from Baltimore to Brentwood.

Traffic will not see impacts until Sunday, April 19, when North Mesa will be reduced to one lane northbound from Baltimore to Brentwood, as crews proceed with placing barrier overnight. The continuous closure of the outside lane is expected to last approximately six weeks. Once complete, crews will close the inside lane for another estimated six weeks.

Drivers are advised to access this portion of North Mesa from adjacent roadways to minimize their time in the single travel lane, and to use I-10 to avoid the area. There will be access to businesses for the duration of the project and major intersections will remain open during the day while work is in progress on corresponding construction phases. Median openings will be closed while crews are working on inside lanes.

North Mesa is often used an alternate route when I-10 is closed or congested. Once completed the project will provide a smoother riding surface with enhanced striping and some drainage and curb improvements. Some businesses will also see new driveways.

While this roadwork will be disruptive, TxDOT is working to minimize the impact to both businesses and drivers, but with three lanes reduced to one, congestion is expected. Drivers are encouraged to budget extra travel time for the duration of the project and seek alternate routes.

The project is expected to be completed in Summer 2021.

Connect10, TxDoT closures, detours for week of Febrary 16

Here’s a look  project closures for the week ahead, including work scheduled to start Friday night.

Friday night and into next week, Paisano between US-54 and I-110 is closed to traffic overnight, with a marked detour that’s easy to follow. I-10 Connect has been closing on and off ramps intermittently, so look out for those. Both the Copia on ramp (daytime) and the Chelsea off ramp (overnight) are going to have closures.

Next week, every night, I-10 west will be closed from Hawkins to Airway, starting at 9PM.

The weather has caused some rescheduling of closures because we cannot do concrete work with low temps and precipitation. The weather also means crews are out repairing potholes and guardrail, so be aware of those mobile crews.
