20 Area Schools Receive TxDoT ‘Seed Money’ for Project Celebration

Twenty schools in the Texas Department of Transportation’s El Paso District have a head start on providing a safe celebration for their graduating seniors. The schools, in Brewster and El Paso counties, received Project Celebration awards.

Project Celebration is a combination of education and lock-in events conducted by educators, parents and community partners to help keep students safe and alcohol-free throughout the school year and especially during school-related celebrations.

Annually, TxDOT awards mini-grants (“seed money”) to help school officials, parents and community partners sponsor Project Celebration education activities and lock-in events. The mini-grants, each $700 can be used to cover expenses such as printing, materials, postage, supplies and room rental.

The goal is to reduce the number of injuries and deaths caused by impaired driving. TxDOT traffic data shows traffic crashes, half of which involve alcohol and other drugs, are a leading cause of death and serious injury for young people (ages 15-19).

The complete list of recipients is as follows:

• Alpine
• Andress
• Austin
• Bowie
• Burges
• Canutillo
• Chapin
• Clint ECHS
• Coronado
• Cotton Valley ECHS
• Del Valle
• El Paso
• Fabens
• Franklin

• Jefferson
• Marathon
• Tornillo
• Transmountain ECHS
• Valle Verde ECHS

For more information on Project Celebration visit their website.

TxDoT/Go10 Closures/Detours for Week of April 8

A couple of high profile traffic developments to keep in mind with ongoing projects.  Starting later this month, work activities will increase on North Mesa Street (SH 20) between Osborne and Remcon.

After the Sunland flyover opens on April 30, crews will close the Sunland overpass and re-route traffic (click here to read more)

  • The continuous complete closure of Executive from Paisano to Rio Bravo (east and west and ramps too) started this weekend on Saturday and runs through Monday, April 9, 5 a.m. and again Saturday, April 14, 7 a.m.-Monday, April 16, 5 a.m.
  • Work Zone Awareness Week starts Monday, but safety is a priority every day. Please remember to slow down, pay attention and expect the unexpected. Keep in mind more drivers are killed in work zone accidents than highway workers.

Next week’s scheduled closures are as follows:

TxDoT Officials to Highlight Work Zone Safety During National Work Zone Awareness Week

TxDOT is reminding drivers to take extra precautions in active work zones ahead of National Work Zone Awareness Week. The week, set for April 9 through the 13, brings awareness to work zone safety nationwide.

El Paso District Engineer Bob Bielek promotes work zone safety year round.

“Keep in mind, that in work zones, you have reduced ability to escape a bad situation. That’s usually because there’s concrete barrier most of the travel lane and sometimes lanes are reduced in width. There are many cars and trucks that move together very closely through a work zone,” said TxDOT District Engineer Bob Bielek.

He adds, “It is really important for people to control their speed, not tailgate and watch what is happening around them. If you get stopped for speeding in a work zone, and there are workers present, fines are doubled.”

In Texas, there are 2,500 active TxDOT work zones at any given time. Locally there are nearly a dozen from Anthony to East El Paso. Drivers should plan ahead.

“Take a look at our website to find out where we are going to have work zones in place and find another way to get to your destination. Avoid the work zone entirely if at all possible,” Bielek advised. “Keep in mind that work zones are temporary situations. They are there so we can provide you with a facility that meets all the geometric and safety standards and you’ll have a far more pleasant drive.”

TxDOT districts around the state conduct events in observance of National Work Zone Awareness Week. In the El Paso District, which covers Brewster, Culberson, El Paso, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis and Presidio counties, bilingual videos with safety messages will be distributed during the week and photos of field crews will be distributed daily all month on social media channels.

TxDoT/GO10 Closures, Detours for Week of April 1st

Work at Sunland Park continues. The flyover to I-10 East is still closed and work to demolish the old ramp and prepare for the new ramp’s opening on April 30th is on track.

As mentioned last week, once the new ramp opens crews will then shut down the Sunland Park overpass, between the two traffic lights, at the Sunland/I-10 intersection. The overpass will be demolished and replaced.

Next up: North Mesa. Work here will ramp up in the next few weeks, with major improvements planned, including replacing pavement in the area and constructing Texas turnaround lanes.

Once work is complete, the overpass will have been completely replaced, and will feature a full bridge span across North Mesa Street free of support columns in the median.

I-10 EAST @ NORTH MESA Overnight

Detour:  Motorist will exit at North Mesa Street (Exit 11) and follow the detour signs to re-enter I-10 Eastbound using the Sunland Park Drive entrance ramp.

Crews will implement a change that places I-10 Eastbound traffic onto the paralleling eastbound collector-distributor (CD) lanes.  By 6 am on Monday, April 16, motorists will be traveling on the CD lanes for approximately a half mile between the North Mesa Street overpass and Resler Drive. The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph in this half-mile section.  The traffic switch will be in place for several months while crews work on the main lanes of I-10 Eastbound.

TxDoT/Go10 Closures, Detours for Week of March 25

While the Sunland Park flyover ramp is currently closed, once the flyover ramp is opened (target date to open is April 30th), crews will next change how motorists get across the Sunland Park Drive overpass.

The overpass reconfiguration will switch traffic onto the eastern-most turnaround bridge, which we refer to as bridge 17.  As the illustration above shows, the traffic switch means a reduction of through-lanes to three: 1 southbound lane as shown by the pink line, and 2 northbound lanes as shown by the green and blue lines. This condition will be in place for at least five months.

Remember, the Sunland Park flyover ramp will be open before this traffic switch is implemented. Also keep in mind, GO 10 is aiming to be substantially complete with structures at the I-10/Sunland Park interchange by the end of this year.

Go10 officials simply say, “We want to be mostly out of your way by January 2019.”

If you’re wondering why this traffic switch is necessary:  GO 10’s design plans call for the demolition and reconstruction of the existing Sunland Park Drive overpass. Crews aren’t merely replacing the pavement of the overpass, they need to bring down the beams and rip out the columns.

The right-turn lane from Sunland Park Drive to get on I-10 West was also restored.

Next week the focus will be on the major closure of the Sunland Park flyover ramp to I-10 East. This closure is necessary so crews can demolish and re-build the pavement that physically connects the ramp to Sunland Park Drive.

TxDoT/Go10 Project Closures, Detours for Week of March 5th

GO 10 is targeting the week of March 19 to close the Sunland Park Drive flyover entrance ramp to I-10 Eastbound. Once closed, the flyover ramp will stay closed for several months, possibly into early summer.

Pinpointing an exact closing date and opening date can be difficult in the field of highway construction because the work can be affected by many unpredictable factors, such as weather.

Closure of the Sunland flyover ramp is necessary so crews can demolish and re-build the pavement that physically connects the ramp to Sunland Park Drive. Once complete, the plan is to open the all-new Sunland flyover to traffic.

The I-10/Sunland Park interchange is the most complex section of GO 10’s six-mile work zone because it involves the demolition and re-construction of two bridges over I-10, as well as the construction of two brand new overpasses.

Keep in mind, GO 10’s broader goal is to be substantially complete with structures at I-10 and Sunland Park by December this year. To achieve that December goal, drivers can expect 2018 to bring:

  • more disruptive closures to the I-10/Sunland Park interchange
  • more significant detour routes
  • traffic slowdowns that can affect adjacent roads, such as South Mesa Hills Drive and Doniphan Drive.

·      The Resler Drive flyover entrance ramp to I-10 Eastbound will close.

·      The Sunland Park flyover entrance ramp to I-10 Eastbound will close.

Detour:  Eastbound traffic will exit at North Mesa Street (Exit 11) and take Doniphan Drive to Sunland Park Drive. Traffic may re-enter I-10 Eastbound from the Sunland Park Drive entrance ramp.

Sunland Park Drive

24/7

Possibly March 19 through early summer

March 19 is a target date. A definite start date will be announced soon.

·      The Sunland Park Drive flyover entrance ramp to I-10 Eastbound will be inaccessible.

Closure of the Sunland flyover ramp is anticipated to be a high impact condition. During this closure, drivers are encouraged to consider taking alternate routes when they can or avoid the I-10/Sunland Park interchange during peak rush hours.

For drivers who must travel through the interchange, they may like to consider carpooling to help reduce the number of vehicles on the road; plus, they may like to give themselves more time to arrive at their destinations on time.

Employers may like to offer employees the ability to work remotely or encourage meetings be conducted via teleconference rather than in-person when possible.

Go10/TxDoT Closures, Detours for Week of February 25

GO 10 crews have opened I-10 Westbound lanes – nine hours ahead of schedule. The closure was scheduled to be in place for 27 hours, starting at 3 am Sunday through 6 am February 26.  As part of the early opening of I-10 Westbound, the Sunland Park Drive westbound entrance ramp is also open.

Drivers on I-10 Westbound can expect a change in lane geometry between Resler Drive and Thorn Avenue.  Lanes are shifted over to the left and motorists will now be traveling on the center median of the I-10 overpass at North Mesa Street (SH 20).  Drivers should approach the area carefully and follow the posted speed limit.

North Mesa Street (SH 20) will remain closed under the I-10 overpass in both directions as scheduled. Crews continue to remove rubble and clean up.

New:  Crews have closed the North Mesa Street entrance ramp to I-10 Westbound until 6 a.m. Tuesday, February 27.

Additional time is needed to complete tying-in the North Mesa entrance ramp to the re-configured lanes of I-10 Westbound. Motorists will be able to take the North Mesa Street westbound ramp onto the North Desert Boulevard frontage road, then enter I-10 Westbound at the next entrance ramp at Redd Road.
