Go10/TxDoT Closures, Detours for Week of February 25

GO 10 crews have opened I-10 Westbound lanes – nine hours ahead of schedule. The closure was scheduled to be in place for 27 hours, starting at 3 am Sunday through 6 am February 26.  As part of the early opening of I-10 Westbound, the Sunland Park Drive westbound entrance ramp is also open.

Drivers on I-10 Westbound can expect a change in lane geometry between Resler Drive and Thorn Avenue.  Lanes are shifted over to the left and motorists will now be traveling on the center median of the I-10 overpass at North Mesa Street (SH 20).  Drivers should approach the area carefully and follow the posted speed limit.

North Mesa Street (SH 20) will remain closed under the I-10 overpass in both directions as scheduled. Crews continue to remove rubble and clean up.

New:  Crews have closed the North Mesa Street entrance ramp to I-10 Westbound until 6 a.m. Tuesday, February 27.

TxDoT Set to Hold Public Meetings on Mesa Street Improvements

Starting in February, community members are invited to provide feedback on recommended improvements for Mesa Street – State Highway (SH) 20 during a series of scheduled public meetings.

The Mesa Street Corridor Study encompasses 9.8 miles from Doniphan Drive to Cesar Chavez Border Highway.

These latest three meetings are the second and last series before final recommendations are made. Identical study information will be presented at each gathering. These meetings are in an open house format with maps, plan details and animations, and will be staffed by TxDOT and consultants ready to answer questions in English and Spanish.

A long list of mobility-based aspects have been studied in the planning process including crash data, driver and pedestrian safety, signalization and signage, mass transit and bike routes and forecasted traffic and travel demand. Generated recommended concepts to upgrade and improve Mesa Street are divided in phases as they relate to future transportation and development needs along the corridor through 2040.

Improvements in the plans include major intersection improvements, a pedestrian deck plaza near UTEP, bus turnouts, bypass lanes to reduce congestion, dedicated turning lanes, signal improvements and sidewalk and crosswalk upgrades.

Community members interested in learning more about the plans, but are not able to attend this last round of public meetings can view details and provide feedback online, and then entering keyword “Mesa Street”.

AUSTIN – Applications for the 2018 Don’t mess with Texas Scholarship contest are now being accepted. Eligible applicants include any Texas high school senior currently attending public, private or home school and planning to attend an accredited Texas college or university in the coming year.

Presented in partnership with Keep Texas Beautiful, the Don’t mess with Texas Scholarship contest will award one $6,000 scholarship and two $2,000 scholarships in June. TxDoT/Go10 Project Closures, Detours for Week of January 14

Officials with the GO10 project are anticipating 2018 will be the year for ‘substantial progress’ on the structures at the I‐10/Sunland  Park Drive interchange.

That means drivers can expect some high‐profile closures throughout 2018. One of those closures starts Monday at 9 a.m. and will continue until mid‐February.

The  closure could cause traffic congestion, especially during rush hours. Motorists should plan ahead.

  • Stagger your commute times to reduce the impact of rush hours.
  • Avoid driving during rush hours altogether if you can.
  • Carpool or take Sun Metro to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
  • Try an alternate route.
  • Before driving, check news reports, I-10 traffic cams or a traffic app to find the best route.
  • Work remotely if you can.
  • If you get caught in a traffic jam, pull off the road and patronize a nearby business.

TxDoT: Texas Transportation Commission Approves $100k for Fabens Airport

The Fabens airport, and two others in Texas Department of Transportation’s El Paso District, will receive funding after action taken by the Texas Transportation Commission at its December meeting.

Approximately $100,000 for the Fabens Airport was approved and will be used for planned airport improvements including preparation of an airport business plan. A project consultant will be selected this winter.

Project costs will be funded through El Paso County and TxDoT’s Aviation Facilities Grant Program, which preserves and improves the state’s general aviation system.

The Commission also approved $175,000 for the Marfa Municipal and Presidio–Lely International Airport. The funds will be used for planned airport improvements which includes preparation of an action plan for both airports. A project consultant will be selected this winter.

Project costs will be funded through Presidio County and TxDoT’s Aviation Facilities Grant Program, which preserves and improves the state’s general aviation system.

TxDoT Officials say arrivals and departures from community airports account for more than three million flight hours per year and provide aircraft facilities for agricultural, medical, business and commuter use.

This year, TxDoT expects to provide approximately $60 million in funding for planning, constructing and maintaining community airports.

Approximately 275 community airports in Texas are eligible for funding.

TxDoT: New ‘Braided Ramp’ Project on City’s Eastside to Begin in January

A new Texas Department of Transportation project aimed at improving eastside mall traffic will get started with the New Year.

The Braided Ramps project on Interstate 10 westbound from Viscount to Airway will improve capacity, operation, circulation and safety along I-10.

“This construction is another component of our operational improvements along IH-10,” said TxDOT District Engineer Bob Bielek, DPA, P.E. “These particular improvements are significant in making access to highly trafficked shopping areas safer.”

Construction crews working on the $16 million-dollar project will start work after the holiday season on January 2, 2018 and will continue until November.

The proposed project includes: ramp reconfigurations and frontage road improvements; intersection improvements at Airway Boulevard, Hawkins Boulevard, and Viscount Boulevard; conversion of westbound entrance and exit ramps between Hawkins and Viscount boulevards to braided ramps and the addition of an auxiliary lane to westbound I-10 main lanes between Airway and Viscount boulevards.

The project also includes new pavement markings, signs, illumination and computerized transportation management system.
Impact on traffic is expected to be minimal as the work will be in progress behind barriers in the area.

TxDoT officials ask that motorists “take extra caution around work crews and be aware the shoulder on the road will not be accessible for the duration of the project.”

All proposed work is anticipated to occur within the existing TxDoT right of way and would not result in commercial or residential displacements.
