U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree to visit El Paso Zoo

The community is invited to view the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree as it travels on a cross-country journey from New Mexico to Washington, D.C. and makes a stop in the Sun City.

The tree is scheduled to be on display from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 15 at the El Paso Zoo.

Well-wishers will have a chance to sign banners on the sides of the truck, learn more about the Carson National Forest and the great state of New Mexico, and purchase U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree merchandise.

The celebration includes activity booths from various City departments. The iconic fire truck with the U.S. flag from the El Paso Fire Department will be on hand along with Sparky the Fire Dog.

The Public Library will have its mobile bookmobile and there will be a tree planting demonstrations from the Parks and Recreation Department.  The Department of Public Health will have several health booths with information for the public.

Every year, a different national forest is selected to provide a tree to appear on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building for the holiday season. The Carson National Forest in partnership with nonprofit partner Choose Outdoors will bring this special gift from New Mexico to Washington, D.C. for the 2019 season, involving more than 25 communities along the way including an appearance in El Paso.

Under the theme of Delivering Enchantment, the 60-foot tall Blue Spruce was cut on Nov. 6 and is making a 2,000-mile expedition. The journey will include a series of community celebrations culminating with the official tree lighting on the West Lawn in early December.

Smaller companion trees also will be provided to decorate offices inside of the U.S. Capitol building and other sites throughout Washington, D.C., along with 10,000 handmade ornaments created by New Mexicans.

Information on the viewing event is available on the El Paso Zoo Facebook and Instagram page. For more information and to track the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree cross-country, click on this link.
