Undefeated Miners FC squad rolls into next month’s National Championship

As folks fired up the grills and enjoyed the outdoors for Father’s Day weekend, a handful of El Paso Miners Futbol Club families hit the road and headed out across Texas to represent the Sun City at the 2019 US Youth Soccer Southern Presidents Cup.

The impressive soccer club has been quietly racking up the wins over the last couple of months.

Miners FC have been putting in long hours and that dedication has paid off, as they have gone undefeated in every game in their age bracket (age 13 and under) this season.

In order to compete at the USYS Presidents Cup this past weekend, they first had to battle it out with other Texas teams.

Under the leadership of head coach David Floriano, Miners FC first tasted victory in two city championships, went on to win the ‘Copa Internacional FC Dallas’ and then became USYS state champions, winning the South Texas State Cup, beating Texas teams from Spring, San Antonio, Houston and Austin.

As state champs, the young team returned home and began to prepare for regionals.

Marking the special occasion, the kids were able to get a taste of life as a professional athlete, by holding practice and training at the El Paso Locomotive Futbol Club’s professional training facility.

Knowing that they would be facing the number 1 teams from across the region, Miners FC showed up this past weekend ready to leave it all on the field.

Not only did they show up but they shut out the competition as they swept the wins over two days, winning the USYS Presidents Cup and beating out the Florida State Champs, to become #1 in Region III covering 12 states, which earns them a spot at nationals.

Club Director, James “Jimmy” Ryan who once played at ACU, returned to El Paso and started out coaching his younger brother’s team.

Eventually Ryan’s young son was old enough to get into the game and after shopping around for teams, Jimmy realized that he could use his experience and skills to help build local soccer talent.

Established in 2002, Miners FC have been putting El Paso on the map for almost two decades.

One of the unique qualities about this soccer club is that they don’t charge any fees, coaches are licensed and volunteer their time.

What this means is, that anybody and everybody has access to learn the game, everyone is equal. You have kids from all areas of El Paso: San Elizario, Northeast, Westside, Lower Valley, Far East Side and Horizon, all united on the field.

In the nearly 20 years of the club’s history they have remained true to their founding purpose, this is for the kids and for the love of the game.

“Growing up I played for several great coaches…Gil Widner and Oscar Herrera, Jose Velez and Dr Manuel Feliberti. NONE of these men ever charged us for their time, quite the contrary, they spent money out of their own pockets to help out whenever they could, they opened a lot of doors for me and gave me priceless life lessons and experiences,” Ryan shares.  “I believe that I’ve taken something from each of them that has made me the person and coach I am today… I wanted to share that with as many young people as I could, to give a great group of young boys and girls a quality soccer experience and put soccer in their hearts and grow them into great productive young kids.”

The mighty Miners FC will be traveling to Tennessee next month, where they compete in the USYS National Championship. This is the first time that the club will be playing on the national stage, where they will be representing the state of Texas and the city of El Paso.

“Our team has momentum right now! I have always liked taking the team to competitive tournaments to expose them to greater talent,” Head Coach David Floriano said. This has helped them grow and develop as players. To be the best you have to play the best…”

With the San Elizario high school boys soccer team winning the state championship earlier this year, making them two-time back-to-back champions, Bel Air winning a soccer crown, and the inception of a professional soccer team, these are exciting times for El Paso and the sport; the Sun City could become the future home of champion soccer talent.
