UTEP Library Presents History of ASARCO Exhibit

The University of Texas at El Paso Library will host an opening reception for the exhibit “ASARCO in El Paso: A Visual History of Industry on the Border.”

The exhibit will feature large, color photos taken by photographer Martin Stupich of the closed ASARCO El Paso smelter site, a few artifacts, and original maps and drawings from the archives left behind by ASARCO when it was turned over to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Roberto Puga, the custodial trustee, transferred the materials to UTEP starting in 2011.

Additional materials displayed are pay ledgers from the late 19th century, clippings and photos relating to environmental pollution and the community response to it, and pictures and information about Smeltertown, the community that was displaced because of lead and arsenic contamination.

“ASARCO was crucial to the economic development of El Paso,” said Claudia Rivers, head of the Special Collections Department at the University Library. “It’s good to look back on the long history of the smelter. There were pros and cons to it, but it did contribute to the development of the community in a major way.”

The reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit will remain on display at the University Library through the end of May. For more information, call 915-747-5697.
