FloraFest 2017 Returns to UTEP’s Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens

The UTEP Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens present the 2017 FloraFest – Native Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30, at the museum, corner of University Avenue and Wiggins Road on the UTEP campus.

FloraFest is the annual event where shoppers can choose from more than 2,000 native and desert-adapted plants and visit with local Master Gardeners or other plant experts for advice on how to care for their plants at home.

Most of the plants sold at FloraFest are not available at local nurseries or retailers. The event is the only fundraiser for the maintenance and operation of the Chihuahuan Desert Gardens and is the largest sale of its kind in the region.

This year’s FloraFest will feature some new plants to the sale as well as some older favorites. The Chisos Red Oak is a new tree addition that is a great colorful tree for El Paso that has spectacular fall color and is of moderate size.

Another addition is the ‘Nuevo Leon’ Mexican Rosewood that will make an excellent evergreen screen about 15 feet in height with dark green leaves and a large white umbel flower. A newly introduced, very florific, False Red Yucca ‘Desert Flamingo’ will also be available.

Many locally adapted colorful groundcovers, perennials, shrubs and trees will be available during the two-day sale.
