Local Rugby Teams Prepare for Sun City 7’s This Saturday

This summer promises hard-hitting, non-stop action in a local battle royale for our city and the title of ‘Best in the Borderland’ when it comes to Rugby 7s.

With multiple Men’s Rugby teams from El Paso and Juarez, rugby is swiftly gaining steam in the Borderplex, and the Sun City 7’s are a way to see who’s the best around. These are friendly matches, but there’s nothing cordial about it.

In rugby, camaraderie is built with every crushing blow and respect is earned.

Rugby 7’s differ from the standard rugby match (where 15 to a side play) as noted by the 7’s – meaning 7 players to a side, on a smaller field.

Located at McArthur Park (738 Gerald Drive), the second tournament of the summer begins this Saturday morning @ 10am. Food and Beverage coolers are allowed, as are folding chairs.

UTEP Rugby Gets A Win to Remember vs NMSU

The UTEP rugby team faced off against their rival, NMSU, Saturday September 30th at University Field. The Miners had a serious challenge in front of them with only one substitute in a 80 minute full contact sport.

The whistle blew and NMSU ran straight in and scored off the kick off. It looked like it was going be a long game, but the Miners where able to hold NMSU 7 – 0 at the half.

The second half started out with heavy hits from both sides. The Miners were able to strike twice making it 7 – 10 without conversions. The Miners then lost 2 players due to injury and would have to play a man down for the rest the game.

The game was tense with 5 minutes to go, but the Miners pulled together and were able score the last try of the game to give the Miners a win 17 – 7.
