Third-year UTEP softball head coach Tobin Echo-Hawk announced the 2016 schedule on Friday. The Miners will play 21 home games, three more than last season’s 18 contests in the Sun City.
UTEP will square off against seven NCAA Softball Tournament teams from 2015. The Miners will take on Arizona, BYU, James Madison, Missouri, NM State, Texas and Texas A&M.
“We have another challenging schedule this spring,” Echo-Hawk said. “I think there’s a great mix of opponents in our preseason that will prepare us for conference. Along with some strong competition in our midweek games.”
UTEP will open the 2016 slate, hosting a doubleheader against Incarnate Word on Feb. 11 staring at 3 p.m.
The Miners will also play in four tournaments prior to opening Conference USA action at Marshall on March 12.
The Orange and Blue will see action at the NM State Invitational (Las Cruces, N.M.) against Incarnate Word and rival NM State on Feb. 13, with another contest against the Aggies on Feb. 14.
The DeMarini Desert Classic hosted UNLV will be next on the slate with contests against UC Davis and UNLV on Feb. 19, Utah State and San Jose State on Feb. 20, and will close the weekend against Boise State on Feb. 21.
Following a trip to Las Vegas, the Miners will head to College Station to compete at the Texas A&M Invitational with games against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Indiana on Feb. 26, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas A&M on Feb. 27, and finishing the weekend against Indiana on Feb. 28.
The Miners will conclude their tournament portion of the schedule at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arizona with contests against St. Francis and BYU onMarch 4, Arizona and Mount St. Mary’s on March 5, and ending the slate against James Madison on March 6.
Home conference action will begin with LA Tech on March 19 and 20. Other league home games include contests against UTSA (April 2-3), UAB (April 23-24) and North Texas (April 30-May 1).
UTEP will host Mount St. Mary’s on March 2 in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. Other nonconference home games include New Mexico onMarch 15 (1 & 3 p.m.) and Southeastern Conference power Missouri on March 21 (12 & 1 p.m.). The Miners will tangle with NM State for a third time on April 19 (6 p.m.) at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.
UTEP’s road conference games at FIU will occur during Easter weekend in which the Miners and Panthers will play on Friday (March 25) andSaturday (March 26).
The Miners will travel to Austin to take on Big 12 program Texas in a doubleheader on April 5. UTEP’s bye will be the weekend of April 9-10.
The 2016 regular season will conclude at Southern Miss on May 7 and 8 in Hattiesburg. The C-USA Tournament will be played at North Texas in Denton on May 12-14.
