UTEP Tennis team ends Fall Season at UNM

The UTEP women’s tennis team will compete at the Lobo Invitational hosted by New Mexico on Oct. 30-Nov. 1. All matches will be played at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex and the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium.

The three other schools include host New Mexico, NM State and Northern Arizona. The teams will compete in dual matches for the tournament, rather than round of tournament play individually.

The Lobo Invite will begin on Friday at 10 a.m.

The Miners are coming off some success at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships in College Station (Texas A&M). Vivienne Kulicke and Duda Santos each posted first round singles victories, while the duo also chalked up a doubles win.

Kulicke and Santos were eventually eliminated in both singles and doubles. Lois Wagenvoort fell in her first round match, but rebounded to knock off Texas’ Chelsea Corvetti, 6-4, 6-2, in the consolation round. Wagenvoort’s second back draw match was cancelled due to heavy showers.

Overall this fall, multiple Miners were crowned champions. Kulicke and Santos won the Crimson Flight doubles championship at the Aggie Invitational (NM State) on Sept. 13. Kulicke was also victorious in the Zia Flight singles championship the same day in Las Cruces.

At the Wildcat Invitational on Oct. 4, Raven Bennett and Matilda Tench were crowned the Doubles Flight No. 2 champions, while Wagenvoort and Daphne Visscher captured the White Doubles Flight championship at SMU on Oct. 11.

Kulicke leads the squad with an 8-4 singles mark, while Wagenvoort is 7-6. Visscher and Bennett each are 6-5. In doubles action, Kulicke and Santos have forged an 8-4 record, while Visscher and Wagenvoort have won their last four doubles matches, fashioning a 6-4 mark. Bennett and Tench are 3-2 this fall.

Women’s Tennis Announces Fall Schedule

The Miners will compete in five tournaments during the fall season

EL PASO, Texas – UTEP women’s tennis head coach Roberto Aspillaga announced the 2015 fall schedule on Thursday. Aspillaga will begin his first season at the helm of the program.

“I think it’s going to be really important to get the girls used to the system and we’re going to focus on the process clearly,” Aspillaga said. “The fall is not like the spring season; we’re not looking to have a team record or anything of that matter but we are going to focus on the development of every player.”

The Miners will open the fall campaign in Las Cruces, N.M. at the Aggie Invitational on Sept 18-20. Next, the team will compete at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arizona in Tucson on Oct. 2-4. The SMU Invite will take place on Oct. 9-11 in Dallas, while UTEP will stay in the state of Texas for the ITA Regionals in College Station on Oct. 21-25. The fall season will complete in Albuquerque, N.M. at the Lobo Invitational on Oct. 30-Nov. 1.

“We have five high-level tournaments where we are going to have a chance to compete against really good players,” Aspillaga said. “We’re going to take our two best players to the ITA Regionals, which is the strongest tournament in the fall where all the best schools in Texas compete. The winner of that tournament gets an invitation to the national indoor championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.”

The 2015-16 roster will see four new faces, while four others will make their return with the Orange and Blue. Freshmen Raven Bennett, Bethan Heyward, Maria Paula Medina and sophomore transferVivienne Kulicke make up the newcomers. Lone senior Matilda Tench, juniors Duda Santos andDaphne Visscher makeup the upperclassmen, while sophomore Lois Wagenvoort returns for a second season.

“We’re going to have a lot of chances to compete at a high level but mostly it’s going to be an evaluation process,” Aspillaga said. “We’re going to focus on the development of the girls and prepare them physically and mentally for the spring where it all matters.”

Last fall, Visscher claimed a singles championship at the Aggie Invitational, while teaming up with Tench to earn a doubles championship at the Wildcat Invitational.
