UTEP Senior Selected to VICE Media National Fellowship

Vania Castillo, a student in the UTEP Department of Communication currently working on a double major in digital media production and journalism, is one of four college students from across the country chosen for the Vice Fellowship for Collegiate Reporting (VFCR).

The fellowship is an opportunity for college journalists across the country to publish content on a focused topic. For its inaugural semester, the VFCR will focus on mental health.

The Vice newsroom received more than 400 pitches from more than 200 colleges and universities for this new program.

The company says the response is a validation of its decision to focus on mental health. Castillo’s assignment will explore the mental health effects of being undocumented on activists.

VICE Media publishes print and online magazines, and is often cited as one of the success stories of new media.

Castillo, who is set to graduate in May 2019, will work with a mentor from the VICE newsroom on the storytelling, reporting and production process.

She expects her report to be published across the Vice network by the end of May.
