EPCC Staff donate shoes, socks to EPCSO

The El Paso Community College (EPCC) Professional Staff Association (PSA) donated shoes and socks to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department. The ceremony took place at the Boardroom of the EPCC Administrative Services Center.

The EPCC PSA Humanitarian Outreach Shoe Drive collected shoes along with cash donations from the EPCC family and the community at large during the month of July. Carmen Wages, Chair of the PSA Humanitarian Outreach Shoe Drive, presented over 278 pairs of shoes and 265 pairs of socks to Sheriff Richard Wiles and his staff for their outreach programs.

The EPCC PSA will continue outreach activities in the fall with their annual blanket and coat drives.

With Win, Chihuahuas gain ground on 51’s

Jake Goebbert slid in safely on a game-deciding play at the plate in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday, as the El Paso Chihuahuas beat the Las Vegas 51s, 9-8. The back-and-forth game featured six lead changes. It was the Chihuahuas’ fourth extra inning game in their last seven contests.

Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Hector Gomez laced a pinch-hit, two-run double past diving third baseman Wilfredo Tovar in his first at bat in the Padres’ organization. One batter later, Travis Jankowski put the Chihuahuas ahead with an RBI single against former Padres pitcher Alex Torres, who was optioned by the New York Mets earlier in the day.

Later, Alex Dickerson’s RBI single and Rymer Liriano’s solo home run kept the Chihuahuas ahead 8-5 until the ninth.

For the second time in as many games, the Chihuahuas took the field in the ninth inning with a three-run lead but did not close the game. A bases loaded walk by Darrell Ceciliani and a two-run single by Matt Reynolds tied the game for Las Vegas.

The Chihuahuas loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the tenth when Ramiro Pena hit a fly ball to center field, where Ceciliani was playing shallow. His one-bounce throw led to a close play, but Goebbert slid in safely to win the game.

It was the Chihuahuas’ eighth walk-off win of the season. El Paso is now 6-6 in extra-inning games this year.
