Gallery+Story: 18th Walk/Run for Families in Crisis goes virtual

The Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home held its first virtual 18th Annual Walk/Run for Families in Crisis on Saturday, June 27.

Event officials say more than 500 people participated in the all-day event, which included a competitive 5K, a one-mile fun walk and a family scavenger hunt.

Many participants said they enjoyed the event, in which they got to choose the time and place to run – including neighborhood sidewalks, permitted trails and even on treadmills.

“My kids and hubby surprised me with a toilet paper finish line,” said participant Luz Munoz. “This was my first official 5K ever, and I’m so proud it was in support of such a wonderful organization. I’m hooked!”

What also made this year’s event unique was that many more out-of-town participants got to join in on the fun, including several former children and staff from the Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home.

“It was so exciting to see that out-of-towners competed as individuals or helped make up large teams, and many of them were in some way connected to El Paso,” said Renée Tanner, Chief Executive Officer for the Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home.

“Some came from as far as Oregon and Pennsylvania. It just goes to show that they will always be a part of El Paso, and we’re just so grateful to live in a day and age when virtual events like these are possible.”

All proceeds from the event will directly benefit the children and families served by the Home and will help cover the cost of meals throughout the year. The Home spends about $78,000 on food annually.

Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home 18th annual Walk/Run for Families in Crisis goes virtual

For the first time ever, the Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home’s flagship event, the 18th Annual Walk/Run for Families in Crisis, will go virtual – meaning people can run or walk wherever possible and submit their results online.

Event officials say that runners and walkers will have all day Saturday, June 27 to participate; given the virtual nature of this year’s event, even out-of-towners can be a part of the run/walk.

“We knew this would be the best way to continue our event while following the CDC’s COVID-19 prevention guidelines and maintaining the safety of everyone involved,” said Renée Tanner, Chief Executive Officer for the Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home.

“We’re keeping the competitive aspect by including awards and prizes, so there will still be ways for people to have fun while helping the children and families we serve.

All proceeds from this event directly benefit the children and families served by the Home and will help cover the cost of meals throughout the year.

The Home spends about $78,000 on food annually.

“The coronavirus pandemic is adding extra layers of challenges to families who were already facing poverty and food insecurity throughout the world,” Tanner said. “This makes our services as crucial as ever, and we’re so grateful for whatever support we can get through this event and beyond.”

Details on how the event works are on online. There are three ways to participate:

  • The classic 5K run will give participants a chance to compete for trophies and medals in various top categories. They will submit their run time, electronic bib number and a screenshot or picture of their pedometer before midnight of June 28.
  • A 1-mile fun walk gives participants and their pets the option to wear a costume while walking for a chance to win prizes. Their pictures would be posted to the Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home Facebook page, and the participant with the most “likes” will win a prize.
  • A scavenger hunt gives families the chance to enter a drawing for prizes by donating any amount starting at $1. Participants will receive text messages on June 27 with prompts inviting them to find items or answer riddles and trivia questions.
