El Paso area Memorial Day closures, events, information

The following is an active list of Memorial Day closures and events, updated as businesses, offices, schools and other organizations release the information.

Most local, state and national offices will be closed, as well as financial institutions and schools.  For specific information, please visit those organization’s websites or social media pages for information.

INFO: Community Urged to Observe Memorial Day Virtually

The observance of the Memorial Day holiday, like other holidays this spring, will look different this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The community is encouraged to honor our fallen military heroes by flying the United States flag at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25. The community is also asked to consider taking a moment of silence at 3 p.m. in an act of symbolic unity.

Throughout the Memorial Day weekend, community members are encouraged to honor our fallen military heroes by sharing pictures or videos on the City’s social media sites FacebookInstagram, or Twitter using the hashtag #MemorialDay #HonoringOurHeroes #IAmElPaso.

The Fort Bliss Memorial Day Ceremony will be held virtually beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, May 25, 2020. The ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook and can be viewed here.

The City of El Paso reminds the public that gathering and picnicking at City parks during the Memorial Day weekend is prohibited. The Local Emergency Directive outlines that City-owned parks to include playgrounds, basketball courts, dog parks and skate parks remain closed until further notice. Use of trails and walking paths have reopened with social distancing guidelines in place.

The virus that causes COVID-19 is still circulating in our community. For that reason, community members should continue to observe practices that protect everyone, which includes avoiding large social gatherings, groups greater than 10, inside and outside of the home.

Residents are reminded that the County has advised it will not open Ascarate Park this weekend. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham also advised that Elephant Butte is in a high-risk area and ask the region, including El Paso not to travel to the New Mexico State Park.

Some City service will also be reduced or not be available on Monday, May 25 to allow staff to observe the holiday. The services include:

  • City staff from the One Stop Shop, Environmental Services Department and Municipal Court will not be available for phone or online customer service needs.
  • Sun Metro bus service will run on a Sunday schedule. The Brio and Streetcar will not be operational. Information is available at www.sunmetro.net.
  • The Greater El Paso Landfill will be closed. The Citizen Collection Stations, which are regularly closed on Mondays, and residential trash and recycling collections will not be affected by the holiday.
  • As part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the health and safety of the public and the City’s workforce as well as budgetary impacts, all City facilities remain closed, including public libraries, recreation centers, senior centers, aquatics facilities, sports fields and the El Paso Zoo.
  • There will be no City Council meeting on Monday, May 25. City Council will meet at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26 and Wednesday, May 27. Council meetings are currently broadcast live on CITY-TV (AT&T U-verse Ch. 99, Spectrum Ch. 1300 and regular TV Ch. 13.4) the City’s government-access television channel, and are streamed online as well as via the City’s YouTube Channel.

UTEP to be Closed for Memorial Day

In observance of Memorial Day, The University of Texas at El Paso’s remote offices will not be staffed on Monday, May 25.

“Memorial Day was always one of my favorite holidays,” said UTEP President Heather Wilson. “There was usually a parade. The flowers were coming out and school was nearly over. But sometime on that weekend, between the cookouts and kick ball games with cousins, we would go to the cemetery and tend to the graves of family members. Some of those graves were marked with the American flags of service members. And we would hear their stories. In a more normal year, we might gather with family and friends this weekend. While this is not a normal year, there is still time for gratitude and quieter reflection on the sacrifices made for us.”

Regular hours of remote operation will resume Tuesday, May 26. The first summer session begins Monday, June 8.
