UTEP’s Amusan, Korir Break Records on Day Two of the West Region Preliminaries

AUSTIN, Texas – Tobi Amusan and Emmanuel Korir had huge performances breaking meet records at the West Region Preliminaries at Mike A. Myers on Friday afternoon, in their respective events.

In the men’s 800m, Emmanuel Korir set a meet record with a time of 1:45.88. The previous record was held by Oregon’s Elijah Greer (1:45.98) set in 2011. Korir adds to the list of records he has set this year, which includes the 600m indoor world record. The Freshman will make his first appearance at the NCAA Championships where he ranks No. 1 in the nation.

Tobi Amsuan broke the meet record (all conditions) in the 100m hurdles with a wind-aided (4.3 m/s) time of 12.63, that ties her personal-best. Amusan clocked the same time earlier this year at the UTEP Springtime, which ranks her No. 2 in the country. The sprinter qualified for to Saturday’s quarterfinal at 6:05 p.m. MT.

Michael Saruni used a last-minute kick in the final 800m to finish in second place with a time of 1:47.32 to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships. Saruni will make his first trip to the national stage, ranking No. 6 in the nation.

Hall started the day for the Miners in the women’s discus throw. Hall tossed the disc out to a season-best of 56.60m (185-4) to garner a seventh-place finish overall. The Senior will return the national stage after finishing 13th overall during the 2015 season.

Lilian Koech qualified in the 800m with a time of 2:07.68 finishing 13th overall and third in her heat, which gave her the automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. This will be the first trip to the national stage for the sophomore.

In the 400m hurdles, Yanique Bennett clocked a time of 59.19 to finish fifth in her heat. Ada Benjamin clocked 54.48 to finish seventh in her heat in the 400m.

Asa Guevara shaved .45 seconds off his time from yesterday to register a personal best of 46.31 to finish 17th overall in the 400m. Daniel Cheruiyot clocked 9:22.46 in the 3,000m steeplechase finishing 10th in his heat.

With one day left the Miners have a total of six student-athletes qualified to the NCAA Championships taking place on June 7-10in Eugene Ore.

The action continues tomorrow starting with the women’s 1,500m at 5:30 p.m., Linda Cheruiyot will look to punch her ticket to Eugene, Ore. Followed by Jonah Koech in the men’s 1,500m at 5:45 p.m. Both men’s and women’s 4x400m relay will compete tomorrow, the women’s race starts at 8:25 p.m., followed by the men at 8:45 p.m.

UTEP’s Winny Koech Punches Ticket to NCAA Championships

Winny Koech is the first Miner to punch her ticket in the 10,000m to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Championships on Day one of the West Region Preliminaries on Thursday afternoon.

Koech crossed the finish line with a time of 34:39.41 to finish fifth place overall, the top 12 competitors move on to the NCAA Championships. The Sophomore will make her first trip to Eugene, Ore.

In the first round of the men’s 800m run, All-American Emmanuel Korir and Michael Saruni both won their respective heats. Korir clocked a time of 1:49.82 and Saruni stopped the clock at 1:51.96. The freshmen will compete Friday at 5:45 p.m. MT.

Asa Guevara notched a personal best of 46.76 in the 400m to qualify for Friday’s quarter-final. Guevara placed fifth in his heat and will compete on Friday at 4:45 p.m.

Jonah Koech earned an automatic qualifying spot in Saturday’s final of the 1,500m run by placing third in his heat with a time of 3:59.27. The sophomore will have a full day to recover before competing again on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.

On the women’s side, Yanique Bennett qualified for Friday’s quarter-final in the 400m hurdles. Bennett clocked 59.49 to finish in third place in her heat. Bennett will compete Friday at 6:00 p.m.

In the 400m, Ada Benjamin notched clocked 53.46 to earn an automatic bid to Friday’s quarter-final. Benjamin will return to the track tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.

Lilian Koech will compete in Friday’s quarter-final of the 800m after running a qualifying time of 2:10.12. Koech will run again tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.

Samantha Hall, Tobi Amusan and Daniel Cheruiyot will look to punch their tickets to the NCAA Championships Friday in their respective events.

Hall will compete in the discus throw starting at 11:00 a.m. Amusan will take the track in the 100m hurdles set to start at 3:30 p.m. and Cheruiyot will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase closing out Friday’s action at 8:00 p.m.
