Women’s Fund of El Paso Gears up for ‘Power of the Purse’

The Women’s Fund of El Paso (WFEP) will be hosting Power of the Purse, their 9th signature fundraising event, on March 1st, 2019 at EPIC Railyard Event Center.

“Ensuring that the community is aware of these barriers of access for women is crucial to begin the conversation into finding a viable solution,” said Georgina Hernandez, President of the Women’s Fund of El Paso

Held every 18 months, the event attracts over 300 guests and includes a silent auction featuring new and vintage handbags and other gift packages, and a Mercado with new and gently used handbags.

WFEP officials add, “Through this effort, proceeds assist the Women’s Fund of El Paso to meet the demand for scholarships and help make a measurable difference in the lives of women and their families. ”

The Women’s Fund of El Paso was founded in 2004 to promote access to funding, information, and networking to help women receive a better education, develop critical leadership skills and achieve personal economic growth.

Since its inception, the Women’s Fund has awarded over $300,000 in scholarships, tuition assistance and child care for low-income single mothers and other women. Even when tuition may be covered by grants or other scholarships, the cost of childcare is a barrier for women to continue their education.

To purchase tickets for the event, become a sponsor, or to learn more about other initiatives the Women’s Fund is leading, text PURSE to 915-800-2944 or visit their website.

“The Devil Wears Prada” Viewing Party at Alamo Drafthouse to Benefit Women’s Fund

The Women’s Fund of El Paso is hosting a special screening of “The Devil Wears Prada” at Alamo Drafthouse with proceeds going to support El Paso women in leadership and education.

“It’s a great way to raise awareness about the impact women can have when they work to support each other,” said Georgina Hernández, vice president of the Women’s Fund of El Paso and a member of the Power of the Purse marketing committee. “And the proceeds benefit local women through scholarships to help with college or vocational school.”

The $20 hot ticket includes entry into the movie party and a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of several designer accessories donated by Lucchesse Bootmakers. Guests are invited to dress up as Anna Wintour or bring their best Vogue impression and be ready for fashionable fun.

The theme for this fall’s Power of the Purse event will be unveiled at the viewing party.

Power of the Purse is the signature fundraising event for the Women’s Fund of El Paso, which was established in 2004 to connect women with community resources and offer educational advancement and leadership development opportunities. The organization has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships.

“The Devil Wears Prada” stars Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in the story of life behind the scenes at a high-powered fashion magazine. First released in 2006, the movie has become a timeless classic.

The viewing party begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 10 at the Alamo Drafthouse located at 250 E. Monticello. Tickets are limited and can be purchased here.

Guests are invited to bring gently used purses to donate for the Power of the Purse event.
