Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa Issued the Following Statement in Honor of Hispanic Heritage Month

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month:

“Every year from September 15 to October 15, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month — a chance to reflect on the immense contributions and the rich cultural and historical legacy of Hispanic Americans. The Texas we know and love would be unrecognizable without the dreams, vision, hope, and hard work of generations of Latino families. This month and all throughout the year, we recognize their contributions and celebrate the Hispanic heritage at the heart of Texas.

“This month is a reminder of the long and important history Hispanics have in this country and across the Americas. From the founding of advanced indigenous civilizations to the first European settlements of this continent, including our own state of Texas, Hispanics have taken the knowledge and wisdom of their indigenous, African and European ancestors and contributed tremendously to a more inclusive and equal nation.

“From the movie screen to the halls of Congress, Hispanic and Latino Americans are in every industry and every community across the United States. Our contributions go beyond food, culture, and music — they also include achievements in politics, medical breakthroughs, technological advancements and valiant service in our military.

“Texas’ population is 40% Hispanic. We are the face of Texas — yet all year long, Texas Republicans have been waging an all-out war on our communities. Texas Republicans left Latinos to die during the COVID-19 pandemic, and continue to militarize our border communities by implementing inhumane border initiatives, especially in South Texas. And now, Texas Republicans are hellbent on silencing our voices by slashing our right to vote.

“Our communities deserve better, and that’s why Texas Democrats are fighting every day to ensure every Latino voter can make their voice heard — without having to clear Texas Republicans’ massive, discriminatory hurdles.

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a reminder that Hispanic/Latino heritage is American heritage. This month, Texas Democrats reaffirm our commitment to our veterans, Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status holders, migrants and to all those who have come before us.
