Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott to Speak at UTEP

The University of Texas at El Paso will welcome the Texas First Lady, Cecilia Abbott, to campus to speak about the importance of volunteerism and service through her Texanthropy initiative during the El Paso Nonprofit Business Summit.

UTEP President Diana Natalicio will open the summit with a welcome at 8 a.m., followed by remarks from the First Lady.

Abbott made history by becoming the first Hispanic First Lady of Texas. She is active in numerous philanthropic groups such as the Women’s Symphony League of Austin, the Dell Children’s Women’s Trust, and is a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

The First Lady is a former member of the State Board for Educator Certification, where she served from 2001-08. The El Paso Nonprofit Business Summit is a community-organized event to bring nonprofit, higher education and business leaders together to improve and strengthen the community. The event is part of the Texas Nonprofit Series presented by the OneStar Foundation. Local partners include the United Way of El Paso, The University of Texas at El Paso’s Center for Civic Engagement and the Paso del Norte Health Foundation.
