The Outlet Shoppes at El Paso to Unveil Mural Celebrating Canutillo History & the Power of Women

Shoppers at the Outlet Shoppes at El Paso will be able to glimpse a piece of Canutillo history with the new mural painted by female artists in the Canutillo Independent School District.

The mural will be unveiled during a ceremony at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 1 at the Outlet Shoppes at El Paso.

The new mural “Women in Art: Inspiring Young Women into the Field of Art” located between Old Navy and Puma, aims to inspire every generation to accelerate action and progress towards gender equality while showcasing the long-storied history of the Canutillo area. This endeavor was a labor of love for the all-female crew of secondary teachers and students led by Jose J. Alderete Middle School (AMS) art teacher, Estella Ramos and strongly supported by AMS Principal Nidia Avila.

Ramos used the power of the paint brush to bring together other female artists to collaborate on this project that marries the future of female empowerment together with paying homage to the past by celebrating the rich culture and history of the Canutillo community.

“As a female artist I have always had a dream of collaborating with other women artists on a project. All that lacked was a subject and a location. I was fortunate to find both,” Ramos said.

“My husband Dr. Regino Ramos Jr. (Canutillo ISD music director), a native Canutillo resident, has always told me stories of the history of Canutillo. I discovered that Canutillo is rich with history, but people living here don’t know about it. I knew that doing a mural about Canutillo’s history in a high traffic venue, like The Outlet Shoppes at El Paso, would help make people aware of Canutillo’s rich history. We were very fortunate to find a willing ally in The Outlet Shoppes and their staff.”

Ramos was inspired by the enthusiasm of the Canutillo community to have their stories told. She was able to reference some of the area’s history through community members’ memories and memorabilia such as pictures, saved newspapers, and eyewitness accounts of past events and locations.

The unveiling ceremony will include special performances by the AMS band, cheerleaders, and Canutillo High School mariachi band.

“We are thrilled to help showcase the history of Canutillo,” says General Manager of The Outlet Shoppes, Carlos Rodriguez. “This is a great way for our children to learn more about our community and for us to learn from them.”
