NORMAN, Ok.- Three UTEP men’s golfers were recognized for their outstanding performance in the classroom as well as the golf course.
Returning seniors Charles Corner and Nicklas Pihl along with recent graduate Frederik Dreier were named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for Division I, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Wednesday. The trio was among the new record number of student-athletes that earned All-America Scholar status, which totaled 260 in Division I.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team’s competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade point average of 3.2. High moral character and good standing at the potential recipient’s university is also factored in.
Corner, Pihl, and Dreier were all named to the 2016-17 Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, for keeping a GPA of 3.0 or better, and have maintained their stay on the honor roll since arriving at UTEP.
Two-time C-USA Golfer of the Year Dreier recorded a team-leading 71.4 stroke average in 13 tournaments while Corner, a C-USA second team selection, finished the year with a 72.6 stroke average while participating in 12 tournaments. Pihl, competing in 12 tournaments, finished the year with a 74.0 stroke average.
The trio was also part of the 2017 Conference USA Championship team and made the trip to the NCAA Washington Regional.
