TTUHSC El Paso Accredited as a Provider of Nursing Continuing Professional Development

TTUHSC El Paso Accredited as a Provider of Nursing Continuing Professional Development

The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation has accredited Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso as a provider of Nursing Continuing Professional Development until July 2023.

“The ANCC’s accreditation fits nicely into several institutional strategic goals, from excellence in academics to clinical affairs, to outreach and engagement,” said Cynthia Juarez, M.A., M.Sc., senior director of the Office of Continuing Medical Education.

“It solidifies that TTUHSC El Paso is a leader in the region for offering learning opportunities for not only students, but alumni, and community members who want to stay current on evidence-based practice. As an institution, we’re increasingly seeing the desire for interprofessional continuing education, which helps foster the team-based approach to comprehensive health care.”

TTUHSC El Paso alumni and other regional nurses will now be able to complete continuing nursing education programs through the Office of Continuing Medical Education.

Continuing education activities help nurses stay up to date with the latest advances in nursing, including best practices, and aim to encourage life-long learning habits for health care professionals. Knowledge and skills earned during these programs help improve care and patient outcomes.

The accreditation process and ensuing NCPD activities aim to show Hunt School of Nursing students that continuing education after graduation is key to their success in the health care field.

The state of Texas is projected to face a shortfall of nearly 16,000 registered nurses by 2030, according to a 2017 report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“This comes as we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Hunt School of Nursing,” TTUHSC El Paso officials added.  “The nursing school has combated this shortage by graduating more than 800 students, with many graduates staying in the region.”

The seven-month application process for accreditation was led by a three-person team at TTUHSC El Paso:

  • KoKo Aung, M.D., M.P.H., FACP, vice president for Faculty Success.
  • Cynthia Juarez, M.A., M.Sc., senior director of the Office of Continuing Medical Education
  • Laura Gorby, M.S.N., R.N.-BC, faculty associate in the Department of Medical Education and lead nurse planner for the Office of Continuing Medical Education

“This accreditation will promote the professional growth of nurses within TTUHSC El Paso and the community,” said Gorby. “Nursing continuing professional development and continuing nursing education activities foster life-long learning of professional nurses, enhance patient safety, improve patient outcomes and promote community health.”

The ANCC is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association that recognizes health care organizations that promote nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes while providing safe, positive work environments.

In addition, the ANCC accredits health care organizations that provide and approve continuing nursing education and accredits transition to practice programs and prepares nurses for new practice roles.

TTUHSC El Paso joins El Paso Children’s Hospital as the only institutions in the region with the ANCC accredited provider designation.
