Bank of America has partnered with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso to create a one-of-a-kind suite that will give dental students the opportunity to learn proper techniques, treatments and sensitivities for the oral health care of special needs patients.
“TTUHSC El Paso is a pillar in our community and our partnership is fundamental to the educational and professional development of dental students,” said Kristi Marcum, market president for Bank of America in El Paso.
“We look forward to the opening of this impactful clinic, affording students the best opportunities to train and better serve those with special needs in El Paso.”
The facility, scheduled to open summer 2021, will give Hunt School of Dental Medicine students clinical experience under the close supervision of faculty, while providing a much-needed service for the community. The clinic’s mission is to improve the accessibility of oral health care in the community and will offer reduced-cost dental care to the public.
When complete, the 38,000-square-foot clinic will be equipped with 130 treatment chairs and is expected to be the top dental-care destination, not only for the public, but for faculty, staff, students and their families.
“The ability to fully equip a special needs suite with a chair lift is transformational for our community. Our clinic will be the only dental facility in the region that has a chair lift and specifically offer specialized services to one of our most vulnerable populations,” said Richard Black, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the Hunt School of Dental Medicine.
“Bank of America is not only helping fulfill that gap in service, but they are also providing training opportunities that inspire our future dentists to serve special needs patients in their own clinics. We’re thrilled for future Hunt School of Dental Medicine students and community members who will benefit from this gift for years to come.”
School officials share that in 2017, only 50% of El Paso residents visited a dentist. In El Paso County, there’s only one dentist for every 4,545 residents, compared to the national average of one dentist for every 1,639.
TTUHSC El Paso’s mission is dedicated to addressing these disparities by educating the future of health care and providing world class patient care.
The Texas Tech Dental Oral Health Clinic is the clinical arm of the new Hunt School of Dental Medicine, which will welcome its first class of students in July 2021. The Hunt School of Dental Medicine is the first dental school to open in Texas in over 50 years and the only in West Texas and the Paso del Norte region.
