TTUHSC El Paso Receives Nearly $2 Million to Expand Graduate Medical Education

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso has received nearly $2 million from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). The funds will be used to expand the scope of the university’s graduate medical education programs.

“These grants will provide the much-appreciated resources to expand TTUHSC El Paso’s educational opportunities,” says Associate Academic Dean for Graduate Medical Education Armando Meza, M.D. “They’ll also help us carry out our institution’s mission of providing excellent training to physicians.”

The $2 million is comprised of five grants from the THECB that will support 27 new residency slots in the neurology, psychiatry, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology departments.

A residency is the final stage of education an M.D. receives before becoming a licensed doctor. While medical school provides students with a broad range of medical education, residency — or graduate medical education — offers in-depth training in a specific branch of medicine.

The city of El Paso suffers from a severe shortage of physicians, but data shows that residents often stay and practice medicine in the community where they complete their training. By expanding the number of residency slots available, TTUHSC El Paso hopes to increase the number of doctors in the city.

The THECB grants will specifically provide:

  • $410,000 to the Department of Neurology to support six residents;
  • $205,000 to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology to support three residents;
  • $450,000 to the Department of Pediatrics to support six residents;
  • $450,000 to the Department of Psychiatry to support six residents;
  • and $450,000 to create a brand new Internal Medicine-Psychiatry Residency program with six residency positions.

The THECB awarded more than $49 million to medical schools and hospital systems in Texas to continue growing the state’s graduate medical education programs.
