TxDoT, Connect10, Montana Project work, detours for Week of December 13

Motorists will get a high-tech assist on making decisions about how they travel through the I-10 Connect Work Zone in Central El Paso.

That’s because the Texas Department of Transportation has deployed Smart Work Zone technology on this project. It’s the first time this technology has been deployed in TxDOT’s El Paso District which includes the six westernmost counties in the state.

The system uses seven portable message boards equipped with sensors and cameras at key locations throughout the work zone to provide live travel time information for motorists who use the marked detour from I-10 to Juárez via US 54 and Pershing Drive.

While the marked detour is about 4 miles longer than the usual route from I-10 to Juárez it includes no traffic lights and parts of it have been widened to accommodate truck traffic.

A field traffic operations center has been set up from which contractors, traffic engineers and inspectors can also monitor conditions around the work zone. Real time information and live video is also fed directly to TxDOT’s TransVista Intelligent Traffic System Center in Far East El Paso.

Long term closure of Ramp H scheduled to begin in January

The Smart Work Zone technology is expected to be especially useful when a new long-term closure begins early next year.

On January 11, 2021, Ramp H which connects eastbound I-10 to northbound US 54 is scheduled to close until further notice. When it closes, all eastbound traffic bound for US 54 or Juárez will remain on I-10, take Exit 24A (Trowbridge Drive), use the newly widened turnaround, enter westbound I-10, and take Exit 22B (US 54/Juárez/Alamogordo/Fort Bliss).

Traffic bound for Juárez will use the above detour and then follow the marked “Juárez, México” detour via the Pershing Drive turnaround to southbound US 54. Traffic will then continue south on US 54 and take Exit 20A (I-110/Juárez, México).

As part of the I-10 Connect Project, all access from US 62 (Paisano Drive) to the Bridge of the Americas has been permanently removed to alleviate congestion which has impacted neighborhoods near the Chamizal National Memorial for years.

The Following Long-term Closures
Will Continue Without Interruption Next Week:

  • Ramps F and G, which connect I-10 to Juárez at the Spaghetti Bowl, remain detoured through northbound US 54 to Pershing Drive until further notice.
  • Interstate 110, the short freeway spur leading to and from the Bridge of the Americas, remains closed to northbound traffic until further notice.
  • US 62 (Paisano Drive) remains closed to traffic in both directions between San Marcial Street and Gateway Boulevard South.
  • Gateway Boulevard East remains closed adjacent to Lincoln Park until further notice.
  • The ramp from southbound US 54 to US 62 (Paisano Drive) remains closed until further notice.
  • Both turnarounds under US 54 at US 62 (Paisano Drive) remains closed until further notice.
  • Intermittent closures on Durazno Avenue, Rosa Avenue and Uva Street.
  • Lane closures will be in place on eastbound and westbound SH 20 (Alameda Avenue) at US 54 until further notice.
  • Lane closures will be in place on Ramp D, which connects southbound US 54 to eastbound I-10 until further notice.
  • Lane closures will be in place on Ramp H, which connects eastbound I-10 to northbound US 54, until further notice.
  • Intermittent lane closures on Gateway Boulevard East between Piedras Street and US 62/180 (Paisano Drive).
