U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke Discusses DWI, Term Limits

U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-El Paso, maintained Saturday night that he did not flee the scene of a 1998 drinking and driving incident, a contradiction of a police report filed at the time.

“I did not flee,” he told Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith at the closing keynote of the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin. “The police report on this count is wrong.”

O’Rourke added: “I reached out to the passenger who was in the car that I was driving — who also does not appear in the police report, among other factual errors — somebody that I’ve not spoken to in more than 15 years, and asked her recollection of that evening. She said, ‘No, we were in the median of the road. We did not try to flee. I don’t know that there was anywhere we could have gone.’”

During the wide-ranging conversation, O’Rourke, who is running to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, also reiterated his commitment to not seek higher office should he be elected to the Senate. He said that while he has been on the campaign trail, most of the responsibility for raising his three children has fallen to his wife, Amy O’Rourke, and that “our kids need us to be a family.” He also said he would limit himself to a maximum of two terms.

O’Rourke accused Cruz — whom he repeatedly refused to address by name, instead referring to him as “the junior senator from Texas” — of running a “cynical” campaign rooted in fear.

After repeatedly making headlines for eclipsing the incumbent in money raised for his campaign, O’Rourke declined to give a firm answer on his fundraising total in the third quarter of this year, which ends Sunday.

“I honestly don’t know, but it’s a lot,” he said.

O’Rourke ended the night by appearing before a massive crowd at Auditorium Shores, an Austin concert venue, where country music legend Willie Nelson headlined a show for the candidate.

“Let tonight be a message to the future,” O’Rourke said. “Let them know who we are, what we believe in and what we are willing to do to accomplish our goals. Let them know that we believe in this country, let them know that we believe we can come together and do great things for this country, And let them know that we believe that Texas can lead the way.”

O’Rourke went to tell supporters they’ve “never been so close, but it’s on all of us.” He encouraged them to get registered to vote by the Oct. 9 deadline — there were 250 voter registrars at the event — and be prepared to cast an early ballot when the period begins Oct. 22.

  • El Paso Police Department are known to contradict some of the, on scene statement reports! they do lie too as they make false reports. If Donald Trump can lie all the time and get away with it, then go figure! this has been going on for a long time till the invention of the camera phone came along.

  • Ted Cruz has always been a snobby spoiled type of BRAT BOY! whom ventured his way to the state of Texas from Canada! He didn’t renounce his Canadian citizenship till he ran for the 2016 presidential election race, but was already in the senate in 2013.How did he get there so fast? I missed that one! I wasn’t following politics closely.
And as for congressman, Beto O’Rourke, his petty drinking DUI crime from eons ago was a wake up call,he knew it, and he did something about it. He reformed himself into a better human being and a person and learned from his mistake, and has not repeated it ever since. But instead has giving back to his community,to his state and to his country and should be forgiven and respected for that. He has served his constituents honorably without any blemishes, so I then ask! What has Ted Cruz done for Texas or the United States?
From 2012 when he first ran for the US senate, he never made NOT ONE VISIT TO EL PASO!
NOT ONE!!! That was until he found out the congressman Beto O’Rourke was running to unseat him from the US senate. Not until then, he started to visit El Paso like a DEADLY Plague! he was probably responsible for bringing those rare black biting flies to the El Paso Zoo this past summer.WE! never even heard about them here in El Paso till Ted Cruz started to visit our city.SUSPICION…SUSPICION!
Ted Cruz is all about distorting away facts from the truth with his campaign smear tactics! and IT’S NOT WORKING! Bigi big difference between the two candidates is that Beto is from the state of Texas. Congressmen Beto O’Rourke is a HOMOGENIZED TEXAN! and A HOMEBOY! from El Paso.
Just another lie coming from Ted Cruz, when he accused Beto O’Rourke of changing his name to Beto in order to appease the Mexican American Dominated community of El Paso.Beto’s mom posted a photograph of Beto wearing a shirt or sweater with the word printed Beto on it when he was only six years old.
Just last year many Texans didn’t even know or had ever heard of congressman Beto O’Rourke! and during the primaries Ted Cruz received over 1.5 million votes to O’Rourke 1 million.
Gradually congressman Beto O’Rourke had not yet made his historic state visit all of the 254 Texas counties. For most he was already written off before he even started, but the Quality of Beto’s success is that’s he’s honest and runs on a positive smooth campaign.
While Ted Cruz’s campaign goes on the smearing lying negative attacks! People in Texas deserve better than that! THAT’S GOTTEN OLD!!! Same ol same ol by the right wing fanatic conservative NUTJOB Deplorables. And NOW IT’S A TOSS UP RACE! the momentum is there,Beto is picking up endorsements and is not accepting donation money bribes monies from crooked special interest super PACS! Unlike Ted Cruz that does take every dollar from these despicable crony lobbyist.
I’m not Beto O’Rourke,so I can go ballistic on any republican rebuttal that comes from the basket of deplorables.CRAZY LIKE MIKEY!!! and some other less than a Neanderthal mind of thinking Donald trumpTURD worshiper thinking that Trump is GOD!
OMG! in just 36 more days we can take care of this mess, and rest assure, that America has always been a GREAT COUNTRY!!! till the arrival of Donald Trump to the White House!
We can’t fix that too…either in 2019 or in 2020,the sooner we get rid of him and his baggish! the better!! then we can start repairing what Donald Trump was trying or taken away from us including our dignity.
And RAMMING! a Partisan Supreme Court Justice down our throats. A bad bad taste that would last for 40 years or more of pure partisan from the United States Supreme Court!
IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! unless……you don’t go out and vote in 36 days days from now.
    I rest my case!

    • Your psychotic rants are the best advertisement Cruz could ever get.

  • Robert Francis O’Rourke is:
    1. Anti-Second Amendment
    2. Anti law enforcement
    3. Anti-ICE
    4. For open borders.
    5. For illegal aliens over Texans
    6. For higher taxes
    7. He is little more that a socialist in disguise.
