RIVERSIDE, Calif. – April Brown delivered a two-hitter in a complete game victory as Utah State defeated UTEP, 4-1, during the final day at the Riverside Classic on a cloudy Sunday afternoon.
The Miners dropped to 2-11 on the season.
Sydney Hart put the Aggies (8-3) on the board first on a solo home run in the second inning. The following inning, Amee Aarhus connected on a hard liner to shallow third that plated a pair of runners, giving her squad a 3-0 advantage.
The Aggies took a 4-0 lead in the fifth when Sarina Jaramillo drove home Aarhus on a single to right.
Freshman Allie Johnson made her fifth start of the season, throwing an inning. Johnson forced a lineout, a fly out to third in foul territory and a fly out to center in a solid first inning outing, but allowed a home run and back-to-back singles the following frame.
Kiki Pepi and Cortney Smith registered UTEP’s hits, while Pepi drove home Lindsey Sokoloski in the sixth inning on a sac-fly to center. The Miners looked to rally in that sixth frame when Sokoloski led off by reaching first on an error and Smith used a double to advance Sokoloski to third. But Brown struck out Taylor Sargent and Kaitlin Ryder flied out to center to end the frame.
