UTEP Athletics to Celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day

The UTEP Intercollegiate Athletics Department is set to celebrate its 20th-annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day beginning Saturday, February 16 and on through Saturday, February 23.

The celebration will include free admission to the UTEP rifle match (February 16), tennis match (February 22) and the women’s basketball game (February 23).

In addition to the sporting events, the El Paso Girls and Women in Sports Day Committee will be honoring three outstanding female athletes, who exemplify Flo Hyman’s dignity, spirit, and commitment to excellence.

Hyman was captain of the 1984 U.S. Olympic volleyball team and led her team to a silver medal, thus bringing U.S. women’s volleyball worldwide recognition and respect. Hyman was also a dedicated advocate of promoting equality for women’s sports. She tragically died suddenly from Marfan Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder, while playing in Japan in 1986.

One Flo Hyman Award winner will be selected from each of the following grade levels: elementary, middle and high school.

Each Flo Hyman Award winner and their distinguished guests will be recognized at a VIP banquet held in the Jonathan Rogers Hall of Champions in the Larry K. Durham Sports Center (located on the UTEP campus) on Saturday, February 23rd at 10:30 a.m., as well as halftime during the 1:00 p.m. UTEP women’s basketball game that same day.
