DALLAS – UTEP guard Jordan Lathon was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week presented by Top of the World and chosen by a vote from a media panel representing the 14-member schools.
Lathon came up with big numbers Saturday night against Rice, pouring in a UTEP freshman record and career-high 32 points. The 6-4 guard added a career-best 18 rebounds on his way to his second career double-double. Lathon set career highs in made field goals (12) and three-point buckets (six), while dishing out three assists against the Owls.
The Missouri product hit 75.0 percent (12-16) of his shots, including a 6-for-8 performance from downtown versus the Owls. Lathon started the game a perfect 7-for-7 (4-of-4 from beyond the arc). He scored 18-first half points on 7-of-8 shooting and tallied seven rebounds.
Lathon was the first Miner to hit 30 or more points since March 9, 2016.
Lathon leads the Miners in assists (67), while ranking second on the team in blocks (19) and steals (20). He’s averaging 10.4 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per contest, while tallying 11.4 points per game and 5.5 boards in C-USA games only.
The honor is Lathon’s second as he was named C-USA FOTW on Dec. 3. Overall, it’s the fifth FOTW honor for the program this season as Efe Odigie has earned it twice (Nov. 26, Dec. 24) and Nigel Hawkins was named FOTW on Jan. 14.
The Miners earned six FOTW honors in 2013-14 and five during the 2011-12 campaign. It’s also the first time in program history that a trio of UTEP freshman have earned a FOTW honor.
