UTEP blows past UAB 3-1
The UTEP volleyball team defeated UAB, 3-1 (27-25, 25-16, 24-26, 25-16) Friday night in Memorial Gym.
UTEP is now 8-20 overall and 2-11 in Conference USA while UAB drops to 9-20 overall and 1-13 in league play.
Talia Jones led the Miners attack hammering 18 kills and posting a .351 hitting percentage against the Blazers. Junior Lindsey Larson recorded a match-high 53 assists and added 19 digs, five kills and four blocks.
The Miners hit a .276 efficiency and sustained the Blazers to a .169 hitting percentage. UTEP recorded 62 kills, 57 assists, 78 digs, 15 blocks and three service aces against UAB.
UTEP took an early lead in the match as they secured the first set 27-25 with a kill by Jones.
The Orange and Blue jumped out in the second set to a 19-14 lead forcing UAB to call a timeout. The
Miners went on a 9-2 run to claim the second set 25-16.
The third set was a tight battle as the teams fought point for point. There were four tied scores but UAB dominated and took the set 26-24.
After taking a 2-1 lead, the Miners were able to keep the momentum going as they began the fourth frame leading 16-8. The blazers were unable to respond and UTEP closed out the set 25-16 and the match 3-1 with a kill by Jones.
