Lucia Mokrasova captured gold in the pentathlon with a total score of 3,896 points
Birmingham, Ala. – Day one of the Conference USA Indoor Championships was a good one for the UTEP track and field teams. The women’s team is in second place with 32 points and the men have scored 16 points to place eighth so far.
Middle Tennessee leads the women’s side with 38 points and the men are lead by UTSA at 49 points.
Lucia Mokrasova captured gold in the pentathlon with a total score of 3,896 points. Mokrasova, who is the UTEP school record holder, eclipsed last year’s pentathlon champion Frida Thorsas (Florida Atlantic) by 56 points.
Mokrasova ran a 60m hurdle time of 8.90 to pick up 931 points to start the event. She followed that up by clearing 1.60m (736 points) in the high jump, by throwing the shot put 13.23m (743 points) and collecting a leap of 5.51m (703 points) in the long jump. The Slovakian closed out the event with an 800m time of 2:22.99 to claim gold and earn UTEP its first team points of the day.
In the 400m dash, Ada Benjamin wowed the crowd by breaking her own meet record in the 400m dash with a personal best time of 53.93 to easily qualify for the finals. On the men’s side, Carnell Horn had the eighth-fastest time (48.40) to snag the last qualifying spot.
The 60m hurdles will present the women’s team with a keen opportunity to score points tomorrow. Tobi Amusan’s personal best qualifying time of 8.30 was the fastest and Brittney Trought’s time of 8.44 was the fifth fastest in prelims. On the men’s side, Sven Zellner secured the final qualifying spot with a time of 8.25.
In the women’s 5,000m run, freshman Winny Koech notched a third-place showing with a time of 16:41.41. In the men’s 5,000m run, the Miners had two men (Antony Kosgei and Daniel Cheruiyot) score. Kosgei took third with a personal best time of 14:23.61 and Cheruiyot finished seventh with a mark of 14:37.22.
The trio of Nickevea Wilson (5.89m/fourth), Amusan (5.84m/seventh) and Israel Ramsay (5.83m/eighth) scooped up eight points in the long jump.
Weight throwers Fayon Gonzales (17.80m/fourth) and Adebola Akomolafe (17.66m/sixth) both recorded personal bests while picking up eight more points for the Miners.
In the 800m run, Jonah Koech easily galloped to a time of 1:56.33 to qualify for the finals and on the women’s side, Lilian Koech qualified for the finals tomorrow as well with a personal best time of 2:11.67.
Florence Uwakwe, who had never run a 60m dash in a Miner uniform, put forth her best effort and clocked a season best 60m dash of 7.52 to qualify for the finals. Uwakwe also cruised to a qualifying spot in the 200m dash with a time of 24.08.
The men closed out the day with a solid second-place finish in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:10.13. Cosmas Boit ran the 1,200m portion, Tommy McCoy the 400m dash, Daniel Tarango the 800m and Jonah Koech closed it out in the mile.
