UTEP Cross Country Heads to Joe Piane Invitational

The UTEP cross country team heads to South Bend, Indiana., to race in the highly competitive Joe Piane Invitational on Friday afternoon.

The women’s team will take the Burke Golf Course at 1:15 p.m. MT in the women’s 5K gold division. The men will run at 2 p.m. in the 5 mile gold division.

Thirty-nine teams are set to compete at the invitational, including 37 women’s teams and 31 men’s teams.

The women come into the competition having claimed back-to-back team titles at the Lori Fitzgerald Open and the Lobo Invitational. Winny Koech leads the team having earned two Conference USA Female Athlete of the Week honors.

The junior clocked in a winning time of 17:16.58 in the 5K race at the Lori Fitzgerald Open.

Linda Cheruiyot and Carolyne Chepkosgei will look to continue to improve. Cheruiyot posted a third-place finish with a time of 17:35.52 at the Lori Fitzgerald Open. Chepkosgei took fourth with a personal best of 17:40.47 in the 5K.

On the men’s side, freshman Rodgers Korir had a stellar first meet taking second at the Lori Fitzgerald Open posting a time of 22:00.41. Senior Antony Kosgei will return to the course. The Kenya native opened the season with a time of 16:25.1 in the 5K at the Lobo Invitational.
