UTEP Cross Country set to host only home meet Friday

The UTEP cross country team will host the Lori Fitzgerald Classic on Friday afternoon at the Chamizal Memorial National Park at 5 p.m.; this will be the Miners only home meet of the season.

The Orange and Blue will host Eastern New Mexico, New Mexico State and El Paso Community College.

Both men and women will run a 5K race with the women’s race coming first.

At last year’s meet, the men placed four runners in the top seven. Anthony Rotich has won this race three times during his career; his winning time in 2014 was 16:49.81 (6K). Junior Cosmas Boit has finished second at this race in each of the last two years, and last year he finished less than three seconds behind Rotich.

Daniel Cheruiyot clocked in a 17:08.28 6K time at last year’s Lori Fitzgerald Classic to place third. Evans Kiprono notched a seventh-place showing by running a 17:48.28 6K.

On the women’s side, Joan Jepkirui won her first career race at the 2014 Lori Fitzgerald Classic; she crossed the finish line with a mark of 20:02.71 (6K). Truphena Sum also finished inside of the top five with a fourth-place finish with a time of 22:02.97.

The top two finishers from last week’s Texas Tech Open, Gladys Jerotich and Lilian Koech, have never competed in this race.
