The UTEP men’s and women’s cross country teams are headed back to Kentucky for the second time in two weeks for the 2015 Conference USA Championships.
The race will be held at the Spero Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green, Ky. The men will run an 8K race at 8 a.m. (MT) and the women will follow with a 5K trek at 9 a.m.
The men’s team will enter the conference championships ranked No. 11 in the country in the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association poll.
UTEP has finished in the runner-up spot in two of the last three years at the conference meet. The team will be searching for its first team title since the 2009 season. The Orange and Blue stake claim to four conference titles (2009, 2007, 2006 and 2005) since joining the league in 2005.
The most-decorated runner in Conference USA history, Anthony Rotich, will look to secure his fourth-straight individual title at the conference meet. The four-time national champion has never been beat at a Conference USA cross country meet.
Cosmas Boit, a two-time Conference USA First Team member, will be running in his third C-USA Championship alongside fellow junior Evans Kiprono.
Daniel Cheruiyot registered a fifth-place finish at the 2014 Conference USA Championships with an 8K time of 24:21.8 to earn first-team honors.
Standout freshman Jonah Koech and Antony Kosgei will run at their first career conference meet; Koech has been outstanding for the Miners in 2015 and has run stride for stride with Rotich at every race. Kosgei has registered three-top three showings during the 2015 slate.
Freshmen Lilian Koech and Gladys Jerotich will lead the way for the women’s team. Koech has been the most consistent runner for the women with two-first place tallies and a second-place showing. At Pre Nationals (Oct. 17), she earned a 13th-place showing in a field of 237 runners with a 6K time of 21:10.7.
Jerotich has one gold and two second-place finishes under her belt during the 2015 slate. She finished 15 spots behind Koech at Pre Nationals with a time of 21:27.9.
Truphena Sum is the seasoned veteran for the women’s team; this will be her third-career appearance at the conference meet. The junior placed 45th at last year’s conference meet with a 5K time of 18:39.63.
Rounding out the squad for the women will be Lilliana Valdespino and Yara Cortez-Alaniz. Valdespino is coming off a personal-best 6K time of 26:16.6 she ran at Pre Nationals.
