UTEP Falls at Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tn. –The UTEP softball team lost its series finale at Middle Tennessee, 5-2, on Sunday at Blue Raider Softball Field.

The Miners fall to 7-14 in Conference USA play, while the Blue Raiders improve to 11-9 in league play and setting themselves up with a potential trip to the C-USA Softball Championship in Charlotte. UTEP will host LA Tech on May 5-6 to close out the regular season and will look to make run at postseason play.

UTEP received RBI’s from Courtney Clayton during the third inning and Linda Garcia in the seventh, but Middle Tennessee took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning off a Morgan Harris three-run home run.

The Miners started a rally in the seventh when Taylor Sargent led off with a standup double to deep right center and starting pitcher Kira McKechnie followed with a single to shallow left center. Garcia plated Sargent on a sac-fly hit to center. The Miners eventually got two runners on bases with a game-tying run at the plate, but MT starting hurler Cori Jennings (18-8) forced groundout to end the contest.

UTEP recorded six hits as Garcia and Ariel Blair each singled in the third inning, Cortney Smith singled in the fourth inning and Kaitlin Ryder doubled in the sixth.

McKechnie threw a complete-game effort, while allowing five hits and tallying two K’s.
