The University of Texas at El Paso will host a kickoff event to mark the start of the FIRST Robotics Competition spring season for UTEP and K-12 students from throughout the region.
The FIRST Robotics Competition kickoff is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at the Physical Sciences Building, Room 208, on the UTEP campus.
The three-day FIRST Robotics Competition district meet will begin Friday, March 27, 2020, at Memorial Gym.
The events are part of the annual For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology (FIRST) family of robotics competitions. FIRST is a national nonprofit whose mission is to inspire young people to become scientists and engineers by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs.
At UTEP, the College of Engineering’s Robotics Program is led by Gabby Gandara, assistant dean for engineering student success and Virgilio Gonzalez, Ph.D., clinical associate professor and associate chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department.
“A big advantage to participating in FIRST Robotics Competition is gaining access to $80 million in college scholarships offered by colleges, universities, and corporations who support FIRST,” Gandara said.
The College of Engineering’s Robotics Program was recently awarded a $10,000 grant from El Paso Electric’s Community Partner Program. Additional community partners include El Paso Water, FIRST In Texas, the University Interscholastic League, IEEE, Marathon, Schneider Electric and the Socorro Independent School District’s Robocom.
“We are cultivating professionalism, teamwork & social skills with young students that employers are seeking in our engineering graduates,” Gandara said. “FIRST alumni demonstrate these traits and have it instilled in them to impact their community.”
