UTEP’s Kapel Wins Second Consecutive Race

For the second consecutive week UTEP’s freshman Cornelius Kapel chalks up another first place finish by winning the Kachina Classic Saturday morning in Las Cruses, N.M.

“He continues to look impressive,” Head coach Paul Ereng said. “He ran at a pace that he was comfortable with and held it throughout the race.”

Kapel led the field of 20 runners to clock a time of 21:21.34 in the men’s 7K race. Teammate Antony Kosgei crossed the finish line with a time of 21:45.88 to finish eighth overall for the Miners.

In the women’s 5K it was a clean sweep with Winny Koech, Lilian Koech and Linda Cheruiyot taking the top three spots for the Miners. Winnyy Koech (17:09.82) led the field of 32 runners before taking off on her own finishing 13 seconds before Lilian Koech (17:22.69), followed by Cheruiyot (17:43.88).

Carolyne Chepkosgei clocked 20:29.59 to notch a 23rd place finish. Andrea Lucero posted a season-best 20:43.82 to finish 23rd over all followed by Destiny White (21:18.58) making her debut for the Miners.

The UTEP cross country will travel to South Bend, Ind. for the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on September 29.
