UTEP Men’s Golf to Tee Off Spring Season at Arizona Intercollegiate

After finishing the fall season strong, the UTEP men’s golf team will look to continue on that success at the Arizona Intercollegiate at Sewailo Golf Club (par 72/7,523 yards) in Tucson January 28-29.

Monday’s first round will have an 8 a.m. MT shotgun start, while round two will tee off at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday’s third and final round will have an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

Aaron Terrazas, Eduardo Gonzalez, Ben Getman, Cole Donielson, Oskar Ambrosius, Greg Yellin, Santiago Castilla and Settavut Paradee will make the trip for UTEP Head Coach Scott Lieberwirth.

Terrazas made the headlines during the fall season as he closed out the first semester with a first-place finish at the Pepsi-Cola Classic at Red Hawk Golf Club (par 72/7,523 yards) Oct. 20-21. The Mexico City native fired a club record 65 during the second round of the two-day event. Terrazas (69-65-67—201). Terrazas, prior to his championship at Red Hawk, won his first career tournament when he was co-champion at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate at NM State Golf Course. The senior was also named Conference USA Co-Golfer of the Week on Oct. 24 to finished out the fall campaign.

Overall during the fall, Terrazas competed in five tournaments (14 rounds) and recorded a 72.3 stroke average. His score of 201 at Red Hawk was also a new career best. Terrazas (71-69—140) placed tied for fifth at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at Cedar Rapids Country Club.

Ambrosius registered a 73.6 stroke average, second best on the squad. The Viborg, Denmark, native also had a solid finish in the fall. Ambrosius placed tied for second at the Pepsi-Cola Classic as he fired a 5-over (74-67-70—211). Prior to his performance at Red Hawk, Ambrosius had a sixth-place finish at the Herb Wimberly.

Ambrosius fired a team-best 2-over at the Paintbrush Invitational in snowy conditions in Denver. The sophomore also finished as the top Miner at the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, to open the fall season.

The Miners will continue the spring semester in Hawai’i at the John Burns Intercollegiate Feb. 21-23 (Wailua Municipal Golf Course) in Lihue, Kauai. Following their trip across the Pacific, UTEP will return to the Southwest to compete at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix (March 15-16) and the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson hosted by Arizona (March 18-19).

The final two regular-season tournaments before the C-USA Championship, will be at the Bearkat Invitational at Walden (Montgomery, Texas) hosted by Sam Houston State (April 1-2) and the Western Intercollegiate (Santa Cruz, Calif.) hosted by San Jose State.

Chris Baryla (-10) was the last Miner to win the event, when he was crowned champion at Arizona National Golf Course during the 2003 season. Baryla’s head coach, Rick Todd (-5), won at Tucson National Golf Course during the 1986 campaign.
