The UTEP men’s golf team finished 14th on the final day at the 45th John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawai’i on scenic Ocean Course Hokuala (par 72 – 7,156 yards) on Saturday afternoon.
The Miners shot 19-over par (296-295-292-883). UTEP however – after shooting 8-over par on Thursday – improved each round, including 4-over on Saturday.
Jacob Presutti shot 4-over par (76-73-71-220), finishing as the top Miner. Presutti shot a 71 on Saturday to finish tied for 40th overall. Greg Yellin (76-74-71-221), Danny Daniels (71-75-75-221) and Damon Vilkauskas (73-73-75-221) tied for 44th, while Greg Holmes (78-77-76-231) rounded out the order of finish for UTEP.
UTEP and Washington State each tallied 170 pars to lead the field. The Miners also penciled in a pair of eagles as Presutti recorded one on hole no. 2 (par 5, 525 yards) in the second round. Vilkauskas eagled the same hole during round three.
No. 38 New Mexico won the team title – it’s first since 2005. The Lobos fired 25-under par (281-274-284-839). No. 27 Arizona shot 16-under (275-277-296-848) to finish second, and no. 43 Utah placed third after shooting 11-under (284-289-280-853). Northern Colorado (305-299-318-922) finished in last place (18th), while host Hawai’i (292-306-312-910) was 17th.
Cal’s Aaron Du stroked 13-under par (66-67-70-203) to win the individual title. Texas A&M’s Sam Bennett (73-68-64-205), and defending champion New Mexico’s Sam Choi (71-67-67-205) tied for second place after shooting 11-under during the weekend. Choi also won the 2020 championship. Bennett, who started the day in 16th place, penciled in an 8-under par on Saturday to shoot up the leaderboard.
