IRVING, Tx – For his effort at the Arizona Intercollegiate in January, UTEP men’s golfer Charles Corner was named Conference USA Co-Golfer of the Week.
Corner finished tied for third in a pool of 92 competitors after firing 2-over 215 (74-69-72) to lead the Miners to a sixth-place finish out of 18 teams. He shares the honor with UTSA’s Zander Lozano, who also finished tied for third at the same tournament.
A seasoned leader for UTEP, Corner never fell out of the top-5 of the field and finished higher than four of five top-25 nationally-ranked golfers, three of which that are ranked in the top-10. He strung together 10 birdies and 32 pars, and tied for second on par-5 scoring among all competitors.
Overall, Corner lifted UTEP over No. 15 California and Washington, No. 25 Santa Clara and C-USA foe UTSA. The week marked the senior’s third top-10 finish of the 2017-18 season and the second time he’s led the way on the Miners’ scorecard.
It is the Cayuga, Ontario, Canada native’s second C-USA Golfer of the Week honor.
Corner and the rest of the UTEP squad are currently in Lihu’e, Kaua’i, Hawai’i for the 42nd John A. Burns Intercollegiate. The tournament begins tomorrow and will run through Saturday, Feb. 17 with 8 a.m. shotgun starts each day.
