UTEP Men’s Track and Field Ranked No. 23 in the Nation

The UTEP men’s track and field team ranks No. 23 in the nation, it was announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

With the conclusion of the regular indoor season, the Miners now prepare for the NCAA Indoor Championships held on March 9-10 in College Station, Texas.

Sophomore Michael Saruni holds the nation’s fastest time in the 800m when he clocked 1:44.89 at the Texas Tech Classic. Saruni’s time is the second fastest in NCAA history, just behind his coach Paul Ereng (Virginia) who set the record in 1989. The Kenya native took gold at the 2018 Conference USA Championships in the 800m and finished second in the mile.

In the mile run, junior Jonah Koech holds the third-fastest time in the nation when he clocked 3:55.81 at the Don Kirby Elite. Koech notched a gold-medal finish at the C-USA Championships and a second-place finish in the 800m.

Both student-athletes will compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 9-10.
