UTEP Men’s XC places in Top 10 at Lou Classic Saturday Morning

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The UTEP men’s cross-country team finished in seventh place out of 36 teams, the women’s squad finished in 18th and multiple Miners set personal bests at the 20th annual Live in Lou Cross Country Classic at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park on Saturday morning.

The Miner men totaled 319 points for a top-10 showing in the 8000m event, while the women totaled 604 points in the 5000m race for a top 20 finish out of 32 teams.

Wisconsin (26 points) won the men’s team title, and Michigan (39 points) crossed the finish line first on the women’s side.

A total of 10 Miners set personal bests on Saturday.

Rodgers Korir paced the men’s team with a 27th-place showing out of over 350 competitors. Korir clocked in a personal best in the 8K with a time of 24:01.9.

Maxwell Kipkosgei (37th, 24:15.6), Kenneth Talavera (45th, personal-best 24:20.3), Gabriel Armijo (94th, collegiate personal-best 24:51.7), Juan Olmos (131st, collegiate personal-best 25:10.9), Yusuf Mohamud (218th, personal-best 25:59.8) and Michael Sims (219th, personal-best 25:59.9) rounded out the finishers for the men’s side. Armijo and Olmos competed in their first 8K as Miners after the pair transferred from the University of Houston.

Ruth Jerubet paced the women’s team with a 35th-place finish out of almost 400 competitors. Jerubet clocked in a personal-best 17:25.0.

Karoline Daland (46th, personal-best 17:36.7), Carolyne Chepkosgei (69th, 17:49.0), Joan Kimaiyo (241st, personal-best 19:03.7) and Andrea Lucero (275th, personal-best 19:21.1) rounded out the order of finish for the UTEP women.

West Virginia’s Ceili McCabe won the women’s individual with a time of 16:27.8, while Grand Valley State’s Isaac Harding captured gold on the men’s side with a time of 23:16.7.

Up next, UTEP will compete at the Texas A&M Arturo Barrios Classic in College Station on Saturday, Oct. 16. Following that, the Miners will take the course in Charlotte, N.C., for the 2021 Conference USA Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30.
